Which engine oil should I use on my R60/5?

I've seen so many different 'recommendations' online ranging from diesel oil to mineral only, semi only and fully synthetic only and can't find anything on here either.

A good quality 20/50 mineral oil is what they were designed to use. Some say use an oil with a high zinc content. In my experience, unless you intend to regularly cross continents, I’d try not to overthink it. I average about 3k miles on all my old bikes, per annum, and I change the engine oil and filter every year.

Any 20/50 mineral oil. Change regularly ( I do oil change every 1500-2000 miles)
Expensive synthetic may be too thin and cause leaks where you had no leaks before …. And it’s expensive!

Thank you all for the replies, that's great and really appreciated....

As well as being 20W-50 the oil must also be SE/CC or SF/CC. These grades contain the zinc (ZDDP) needed to protect the cam followers. Newer grades of oil do not contain the ZDDP because it can damage catalytic converters. Read the small print! Silkolube is available in the right viscosity/grade and so is Motul classic

Thank you Mad Hatter (y)

i get 20l classic 20/50 with zddp off ebay, cheap as chips and change every 2-3K miles which is over a year for me, comes out bike spotless

I use Millers Classic Pistoneze 20w50 mineral. Conveniently available from Halfords, usually at a reasonable price. Cheap insurance. Meets SF so a good chunk of ZDDP - you don’t want to be replacing four cam followers at 60 quid a pop…
