Engine oil.

Hi,
New to BMW biking, what oil are people using for a 2015 GSA, I know its a 5-40, it it advisable to buy the BMW Motorrad ADVANTEC Ultimate oil or is there a cheaper alternative that is as good.

Cheers bro, Is this as good as the BMW oil? I assume it will also be fine for the wife's 65 plate R1200R, we are off to the Czech Republic in a few weeks and the bikes are very new to us so I don't want to get it wrong.

No problem
I use it in my 65 plate gsa
And the oil filter is so much easier to get on and off as it has a bolt on the end to use rather than a strap ratchet

The BMW oil is re-branded Shell oil.

The recommended oil for the LC is 5w40. I'd stick with a decent brand - Shell (BMW), Castrol, Silkolene or Motul.

Both your GS LC and your wife's R LC have the same engine = same oil.

Couldn’t agree more.
I have used 300v in all my bikes - Goldwing 1800 included - and the change in gear/smoothness was dramatic & welcome.
Fantastic oil and I also highly recommend it.

@skid06 : is there some reason why you use 15w instead of 5? Just wondering as I may give it a try if you have a specific reason.

No , because that sounds like it's a car engine oil . Get an MA2 Fully Synthetic oil , you can't buy 5/40 as a semi anyway. MA means it's for Motorcycles with a wet clutch. Better to stick to the manufacturers recommended viscosity but any good brand will do , Castrol, Putoline, Silkolene , Motul etc

Motul 7100 4T 5w-40. £39.95 for 4 litres on EBay. Far and away the best oil for these engines and meets or exceeds all required specifications.

My Other Bikes (Ducatis) run 15-50 ..ive always run my GS from new on 15-50 300v with no problems, 5W oil is very thin..cant see why we need it in UK, ive just done 400 mls this weekend around wales on a friends GS, it felt rough in comparison

That is car oil. You might be better off taking your bike to a dealer mate

Might be wrong but I think the thin oil is because of the GSAP

The thin 5w 40 oil gets around the engine quicker on start up,
10 w40 circulates much slower,
Ducati run ball bearings on the crank possibly needing thicker oil,
The bmw gs lc plain bearings and oil galleries are designed specifically so grade is important,
Silkolene and motul do 5w40 ma, correct grade quality oils,

It's multigrade, so you have to consider both figures, not just the low one. For example, a 5w-40 behaves like a 5 weight (thinner) oil when cold and like a 40 weight (thicker) oil when hot.
