This has probably been asked and answered before, but just so I get the latest info, is it possible to buy 20/50 Engine oil of decent quality but in semi synthetic form? I use Castrol GPS 10/40 at the mo ;)

yes it is, find your local Rock Oil dealer, they do a semi synth 20/50 high spec oil. lovely green stuff, yummy.

Marvellous, thanks :thumb.

Can I assume therefore that you use this in your GS with no prob's?

Morris oils from Shrewsbury do a range of motorcycle oils.

Look for the ones designed for V twins. A 20W/50 mineral oil and a 10W/50 synthetic.

There's a form on the contacts page to request details of your nearest stockist.

Putoline do a semi synthetic called sport 4 - any grade - my local dealer just got me four litre of 20W/50.

Rainbow use Putoline in all thier bikes - it is a bike specific SG rated oil with clutch friendly friction modifiers (whatever the ferk they are)

Maybe relevant to bikes with a wet clutch however I believe the GS has a dry clutch! Someone correct me if Im wrong!

You are dead right there, also as the GS gearbox is seperate, the advantages from a specific motorcycle oil become even less important.

In discussions with several notable BMW mechanics. They advised not using synthetics in the boxer engine for at least 20,000 miles. Any validity to that ?

Yep, I have heard that also. Mine is now showing 31,000 mls so I guess it's now ok to use it. My understanding of Synthetics is they are not recommended for use from new in most engines due to preventing "normal" bedding in

But note I said friction (not friction-less) modifiers. The oil is SG rated as recommended by BMW and is an old (even obsolete according to some sources)
API rating.

Motorcycle engines are different to car engines (bollox I hear you cry - but they ARE) and will benefit from the formulation of a specific oil with the inclusion of certain additives which a car specific oil won't have.......I think........

....or I might just be gullible with more money than sense........ :D

Being the Devils advocate here....Other than air/oil cooled engines......what brought to this conclusion ?

advertising of course........sucker for it........ :mmmm

Most motorcycle engines are different from car engines in that they have a wet clutch (which contaminates the oil) and a gearbox in the crankcase (which mashes up the oil). Neither of these factors applies to the BMW boxer engine of course.

The boxer does rev higher than a lot of car engines, and it's air cooled which means it runs a bit hotter (I think?) - but I'd be happy putting a quality car oil in mine. In fact that's what I'm going to do next service, probably a synthetic 20W/50 seeing as it's now done 24,000 miles.

Put any cheap car sheete you like, just choose appropriate temperature range oil. Going to Iran i chose 20W-50, here in Estonia where i ride from 5 to 25 degrees Celsius mostly 10W-40 - and cheap arse half-synthetic oils and it runs like clockworks. No need to waste your money on special expensive MC oils that are for wet clutch rotating at the speed 10 000+ revolutions per minute and polluting the oil with it's ware. On boxer you run mostly around 3-5K rpms, dry clutch, pretty much the car engine itself. :D

But DO PUT put the highest qualiti transmissions oil to gearbox and final drive. Thse are the most fragile mechanical systems the GS has.

Here in the USA a lot of us use Mobil 1 15-50 full synthic with very good results. I have over 120,500 miles on my 1150gs. It is just getting bedded in as you say. Last 5000 miles it used about 1/2 litter.

Crikey! 120,500 Miles :bow
