Should I be worried about this....?

It's where the water collects when washing the bike is on the side stand.

If it's any consolation, mine's done exactly the same (and the underside of the sump too).

Is the paint actually coming off or is just a residue being left behind?

Wash it on the centre stand.

And dry it properly.

Or simply coat it in ACF50 and forget about finish and corrosion.

Mine has paint coming off the flying urine sample counterweight, the motor, the starter, the frame, the fork legs, and my old rims had the finish flaking off of those.
Someday Spandau will understand that manufacturing a motorcycle with a substandard finish on key components will result in lack of enthusiasm for repeat business on the part of the consumer.
In a nutshell, "they all do that" applies in this case.

Check the weep hole on the water pump which is just above that spot mine has done that a couple of times when its got hot on a green lane two up low speed.
It does'nt leak with normal riding so I'm not stressing about it at present, but one day water pump seal will need doing.

It's paint coming off!

I generally wash it on the centre stand but water collects there regardless. I do try to soak it up with a sponge.

I wouldn't mind so much but the bikes been garaged through winter so, in real terms, its only had 6 months use.

I wouldn't expect to see the paint affected like that for quite a while!

......and it gets wiped down with ACF50 or GT85 after a wash.

On the somewhat rare occasions I washed mine I always used a leaf blower to get rid of the 'standing' water ... especially important behind the engine block and inside the radiator cowling... But as has been said ACF50 is King

Funnily enough that`s exactly where the paint was bubbling on my 800s, the corrosion was underthe paint no damage to the outer surface of the paint. Water does collect there when washing the bike but I dry and ACF 50 it.

I had an F800S back in 2006/7 that needed new engine casings twice (under warranty) because of this issue.

I can't believe they still haven't got this problem sorted. Then again, perhaps I can.

Are they still replacing engines under warranty?

Advice

Had a trouble with paint flicking off on my oil sump. The trouble sometimes is that once paint starts to flick off some elements such a salt can get under it and promote further paint comming off. It of sourse depends where the exposed part are. Some locations are worse than other.
You can either prevent corrosion with ACF50 or such, or you can just easily repaint the engine (as I did).
Get a black engine paint from eBay, carefully remove all paint that does not adhere properly to the engine, remove all the oil/grease that might be on the engine using unpolar solvent (such as heptane), remove carefully the oxidized surface of the aluminium using fine sand paper and finally apply the paint using small paintbrush. I personally made maybe 20 layers of the paint which parfectly blended in. Despite the paint come in spray cans I have much better experience using paintbush as you get the paint exacly where needed.

Parts of oil sump I have repainted this way are in perfect shape even after winter.

Hope this helps.

I've noticed bits of paint coming off other places on the engine over the last week.

May have to raise it with my dealer at the weekend!
I've still got another 14 months of warranty left.

Regards

14 month left

oh, did not notice the bike is so new.
In that case the dealer should sort it out for you.
When I bought my bike, I found a bit rust on the main frame and dealer changed the whole frame for me as warranty work.

They may argue it. Warranty only covers paint for the first 600 miles. I saw some after, was told as it was minor therefore didn't qualify and now have a bald sump

I TOO HAVE A 800GS WITH PAINT COMING OFF SUMP AND CRANKCASES. ALSO CAN FLICK PAINT OFF SWINGARM IN PLACES WITH YOUR NAIL. THE FRONT WHEEL HUB HAS SPIDERS WEBS TYPE CORROSION ON IT ALSO. I HAVE ONLY RECENTLY PURCHASED THIS BIKE, THOUGHT I WAS BUYING A GOOD BRAND WITH TOP NOTCH FINISH. BIKE HAS ONLY 4 THOUSAND MILE ON IT. STARTING TO THINK THE TIGER 800 MIGHT HAVE BEEN THE BETTER POTION.

Signs of corrosion were making themselves apparent on my F8 before 1K miles , not on the paintwork but fasteners. I chopped it in recently, with just under 2.5K on the clock, but dread to think what the crap quality fasteners would look like after a full year of ownership.

Right from the off I was suspect about being able to keep the F8 looking tip top. This would also apply to the XC I should think, particularly the easy to mark black items like the tank protectors and all other black plastics. I've never known a bike to mark so easily as the F8. As I say, I dare say this is commonplace with many adv style bikes that use these modern materials.

Fortunately my replacement bike doesn't have half this modern crap finish plastic material and looks like the finish will go the distance - time will tell.
