I seem to have a squealy rattle from the engine on the first pull away of the day. Seems to be from the left hand side. My drive is quite a steep upward slope and this noise is less noticable if my first pull away is not uphill.

My previous GS developed the same thing but after 35000 miles, this one has only done 6000.

Any ideas?

**Make sure you read the all the links in the above thread**

Mine started developing a bit of a knocking noise, especially at tickover. I bit the bullet & bought the new style cam chain tensioner for the left cylinder only. Worked a treat, soon as I fired the bike up, it was noticeably & significantly quieter.

The cost is a staggering £128.00 if you buy in the UK or 160 Euros in Germany. I paid 146.60 Euros because I bought mine in Germany just before a recent price hike.

Telelever arm needs to be removed, lube all moving parts of the new tensioner, install & put bike back together.

Can't guarantee this will solve your problem but worth investigating.

Alternator Drive Belt??

Hi Botty,
I've had this before, bike starts fine, sitting on fast-idle as I get my gloves on etc, then as move off there's an intermittent "chirpy/screech" noise - not the best description maybe??. Anyway, it's caused by the alternator drive belt behind the black plastic cover on the front of the engine slipping on the pulley - remember the bike's just done a cold start so the battery is down a bit and loading the alternator.
The noise can be fixed easily by either tensioning the belt as per manual, or if worn/old, replacing with new belt and tensioning as above.
Hope this helps - it certainly sounds like it's the same problem - let me know how you get on?

mine does it too. i put it down to the alternator belt.

must get round to tensioning it.

From description it is most likley the alternator belt. Thanks, will get it looked at as its still under warranty.
