Stripping my 1200, anyone know the magic to releasing the barrels? all nuts and bolts removed, just wont budge either side.

also can anyone recommend someone herts,beds,bucks,northants who will polish and port the heads etc.

As above plus unless your looking to get the ECU remapped or run a PC and some dyno time don't port the heads. Your fueling will be miles out otherwise.
 
Does porting the heads really make much difference on an R1200?

An off the wall idea but one of these would be fun :)

Beats all the current EPA (very tough) regs and gives better fuel economy than competing 4 strokes. 164bhp from 800cc should be enough

Spent hours beating it with a rubber mallet! The porting wont make any difference to the fuelling though I am considering a power commander and dyno time, not after a rocket ship, just smooth efficient fueling and response while I have the engine apart

You're right fuelling is independent of the porting as air density/flow rate is monitored on the intake and each cylinder has a lamda probe to control fuel ratios to defined parameters
 
I make the OP right, these engines are churned out by the thousand. There can be no harm in a little blueprinting while the engine is in bits, you'll be amazed at the difference removing the odd rough casting edge / burr can do. It's not about outright performance, it's about efficiency :thumb

Go on then and do it and report back.

Air density/flow is not monitored by the ECU on a 1200, there is no flow meter and the only MAP sensor in the system senses atmospheric pressure only. The lambda only operates on closed loop I.E. cruising and as it is narrow band can only operate in the 14.7 range which may be optimal stoichiometric but its far from optimal for either fuel use or clean running. . It only has a certain amount of adjustment either side as well. Think of a spreadsheet, go outside what's on the sheet and the fuelling goes to pot.
If it was so easy then why do you think people run into fuelling problems just fitting an exhaust and an air filter.
 
Another option would be cylinder head and exhaust gas temperature sensors and a way to adjust the fuelling. Its probably used on this -

Not sure what your getting at, are you suggesting my idea is flawed? On the other hand I got home from work, positioned a fan heater next to the crankcase for an hour till it was nice and warm, one tap if the mallet and the barrel came loose and t'other side

Just to be sure, that is 1 M8 bolt and 1 M6 bolt inside the camchain tunnel, and 2 M6 bolts on the outside - lower edge. You also need to remove the pivot bolt for the camchain tensioner slide in each side.

Assuming you already have the head off, then if they are all off the only thing holding it on is gasket goop at the base.

Just stating that the fueling will be affected and won't take care of itself if you port the heads. Wasn't really aimed at yourself.
 
Well, I'd enjoy seeing pics of this job, camchain tunnels etc :beer:
 
Thanks, I'm using the same reprom, as I posted I heated the whole thing up using a fan heater, so the whole assembly would expand, I returned after an hour of it warming in front of a fan heater, visually I saw barrel had started to creep from the crankcase, one tap with the mallet and it moved then slid off, same on the other side, also the timing cover freed too.
