engine studs

A friend of mine is trying to restore an r100/7 and he has a problem with the installation of cylinders. According to *bins catalogue there are 8 engine studs of which six are short and the remaining two are long. He can't confirm this in the repair manual and don't know where to install the long ones. I guessed anyone who has replaced the studs before may help him.

I`m not totally sure how there can be any confusion...

There are eight long barrel/head/rocker gear retaining studs.

( Four per cylinder )

There are two shorter head/rocker cover centre studs.

( One per cylinder )

In addition,each rocker cover has two very short studs,diagonally opposed,6mm thread.

The area to beware is in the stud DIAMETER....some models have 10mm studs and some have 12mm studs.

Also be careful not to block the oil feedway from the crankcase to the rockers,which is visible at the edge of the top left stud on the left cylinder ( and IIRC on the lower right stud ).
Ditto the right cylinder.

ignoring the 2 short cylinder to head studs, motobins DO list 2 different length studs for his bike.

2 x 297mm

6 x 275mm

i don't know which length goes where though i'm afraid. my BMW manual does not cover this issue. i suggest a quick call to motobins.

I think he's confused about the eight long barrel/head/rocker gear retaining studs.

He bought them new from motobins and they are specified as 6 short and 2 long in the catalogue.

CRANKCASE STUD M10 x 275mm 8 REQD FOR /5.
6 REQD FOR ALL EXCEPT R45/65

CRANKCASE STUD M10 x 279mm 2 REQD FOR 1974-1997 MODELS EXCEPT /5


As Cookie suggested it is better to call Motobins

motobins says two long studs are for the right rear studs. the are 279 mm. all the other studs are 275 mm. i tried and it works ok... the stud housing for the right rear ones are longer...
