Engine whine 05 1150GSA

David, have you checked the rear upper crash bar mounting bolts, the weld (on OEM) can fracture allowing the bar to resonate which produces a weird sound; mine went like that and were replaced with Steptoe headguards.

Ha! Yes it has fractured but it isn't that. I'm living with it as it's still very solid. Good thinking though, ta!

it's not the fuel pump is it?

I think it may well be and mentioned it in #4 and #7 but Tsiklonaut said in #6 that it would be a single note independent of revs. If he's wrong there's a good chance it's that - just a little louder than usual.

If the ABS/servo did fail catastrophically I hope I'd see it coming!
My only concern is the louder than usual whine which gets louder as it warms up, but that may just be a 'feature'. The bike runs beautifully and should be totally reliable as its been cosseted and very well maintained. My other 3 x 1150's have been pre 2003 and this is a late 2005 SE so there could be some difference in the unit.
By the time I get back from Wales in about a week's time I'll have compared it to my mate's 2003 GSA and will know a bit more...

I will try and record the sound and post it.

Cheers

David

You won't necessarily see it coming. If it is the pump that could be your tell tale sign. You'll could have brakes one minute and feck all the next.

Up to you, but if you think it's the ABS pump then I wouldn't ride it until I knew for sure. First thing I did with my 04 was to take off the ABS pump and save myself from potential disaster, and mine was actually working fine!

Blimey! Do you know of cases where this has happened?

The servo motor is what powers the brakes, no servo and you have "residual braking" which is a polite way of saying "No brakes".

I'm not trying to scaremonger, it has happened to a few on here. There is a big thread on removing the servo "servoectomy" in this section. If the servo fails it is expensive to replace, but you have the choice of repairing it or removing it, because without it the brakes don't work. Once removed. the brakes work like standard connected brakes. You lose the ABS, but at least you know that every time you pull the lever, something positive will happen.

It has has happened to quite a few people, it happened to the guy I sold my low sargent seat to as he was riding it back from buying the bike.

It may not be the servo, but please please please make sure it isn't and don't ride it if the servo is potentially the issue.

Thanks Flip.

There's nothing to suggest that there is anything wrong with the braking system. I've had a load of 1100/1150/1200s in the last 20 years so I am used to the sounds they make even if I can't be sure where the individual sounds are coming from.

I suspect it is the fuel pump as the fuel is low. What was confusing me is that the noise alters in a linear fashion with revs but that's probably right. The fuel filter was replaced 10k miles ago and 12k before that but I'll replace it anyway to see if that quietens it down.

As far as the braking system goes, I would like to remove the brake servo as I hate it but don't want to change an otherwise standard SE. 'If it aint broke....'

Yes, and it's going when I get around to it, it is rattly!

My lads has one fitted and it bugged the hell out of me where the humming resonating noise was coming from. Just thought it may has been that you could here. The solution was and still is two matchsticks pushed in either side of the cover at the bottom. Stopped the mouse even if it looks a bit of a Heath Robinson fix. :D
