Erratic fuel gauge, 2006 GSA

Boxerboy, you're missing the point!

Never mind the gauge, we're all carrying around 5 litres of fuel we can't retrieve. This is a problem that's come on all of a sudden, in my case at least - used to stick 32 litres or so in regularly, now maybe only 27.

To be honest, although everyone moans about the gauge, I had learnt to live with mine OK, and more often than not took it down to single figures before filling up. Only once did the "range" let me down, i.e. run out with miles still showing. Unfortunately that was in a fairly remote spot in Chile...

My triple black is a month old I let the fuel run down to 10 miles on the computer then put in £10 in and it is still saying 10 miles and counting down although there's fuel in it, I thought they changed the fuel strip for something more reliable on the new bikes, obviously not!

Ah, that looks like it!

I reckon that might explain why the fuel gauge also is behaving differently all of a sudden, assuming the float's only one side.

Anyone know how this is meant to work? Does it keep both sides balanced, or only pump fuel when the level drops to a certain point, which would make sense? I guess if I'm lucky I might just have a broken wire, bad connection, or something.

i am told by an x BMW tech that the LH side of the tank stays full until the RH side is empty, so the gauge reads full until you are about halfway on miles to an empty tank, this is why if it isnt working you can get going by laying the bike down

fuel in the RH side is syphoned across (see my post higher up) by some use of the return fuel from the engine

Me Too...

Hi Ian and Tony

Thankyou for this post. I ride a 2011 GSA and had it from new, I too have never been able to get more than 27litres fuel into an 'empty' tank.
The fuel light comes on and in 3 miles the engine stops, I coast to hard shoulder, shake bike, can hear fuel sloshing around in tank, fire up and good for a 1/2 mile and engine stops again. Lost count now as to how many times this has happened.
Under warranty my dealer has found a kinked pipe that siphons the fuel from one side of tank to the other.......Pipe replaced under warranty. Unfortunately problem persists. Booked in again and told the fuel pump will be replaced this time and is being done on 10th April under warranty.
Please keep us informed of any updates to this problem as I am wanting to get this issue fixed also and any details I can pass on to my dealer would help I'm sure as they don't appear to have come across this problem before.
Feel very nervous when my fuel light comes on because I know I'll only be able to ride about 3miles before engine cuts out.
Will let you know what happens to me.
Cheers and nice to know I'm not alone.

Hi Ian/ And all who are still having problems

My bike went in last Tuesday as I said and I don't have it back yet.

I'm not getting details in full when I ring but I'm hoping to hear something tomorrow. I'll try and speak to the chap in charge of the workshop.

They have a "master technician" at my dealer so I'm told so we should get to the bottom of this. Eventually.

I'll be back as soon as I know more.

More new parts were ordered, I do know that much, that's why its taking a while.

Cheers
Tony

Hi Tony

Thanks for the update. Which BMW dealer is working on your bike?
As I think I would help myself by getting my dealer in touch with yours to talk tactics and hopefully resolve this issue...

Regards
Nick

Tony: Thanks, thought they were probably ordering/trying bits! I hope they know which bit actuallly cures it in the end!

Nick: Yes, I did the same as your dealer (the pipe that was 'kinked' is actually part of the Sucking Jet Pump) - same results!

Mine's going into the dealer on the Apr 4th for the same problem. If you get this fixed, please post asap, I would like to have some info to steer them in the right direction.

Thanks,

Joe

Filled up my GSAdv with fuel so I could get it to the dealer to fix fuel transfer problem. Thought I should ride it at least 150 miles to make sure it would get there (110 miles away, thru very rural area with no cell service). In the past, it would go about 240 miles before lack of fuel transfer would cause it to run out. I got 3 miles from the gas station when it dropped dead (on a 65mph highway). Looks like the fuel pump died, the usual fuel pump noise when you first turn the key on was gone. Could be that the pump was running slower, which would cause the lack of fuel transfer from the right side of the tank, then it finally just died.

Joe

Hmmm, be interesting to see what fixes it.

I suppose it's quite possible that we've all got different problems....

Sorry lads but still not a word from my dealer :tears:tears

I'm guessing whatever they changed didn't sort it. :nenau

I'll post as soon as I know anything.

Cheers

Thanks for the update Tony. Hoping you'll know something before Tuesday as my bikes due in that morning for exactly the same 'unknown' problem..

Regards

Nick

UPDATE!!
Dealer called today and said my fuel pump electronic controller died. He stated that the o ring seal was installed incorrectly and caused it to get wet and fail (this is the same part that was replaced under recall by another dealer!!).

I asked about the transfer of fuel from the right to left side and they didn't know anything about that. He then put the "tech" on the phone so I could explain to him about there being 4 gallons of gas still in the tank when it ran out of fuel. I was amazed to find that he didn't have a clue how the system worked!! He never heard of the sucking jet pump and how it used return line flow to move fuel to the other side of the tank.

I will pick up the bike next week and told him not to touch anything else. It is painfully obvious that I know more about this than they do, so I will fix it myself.

Sorry for the rant, but I've had it!!

Joe

Hi Ian, Nick, Joe and others.

I have my bike back, today!
I called the dealer Thursday as I hadn't heard anything from them in 10 days, apart from asking to swap the loan bike!

Tried to speak to the lad in charge of the workshop Thursday but he wasn't answering the phone and didn't call back.
Called Friday and got to speak to the manager. Good Friday probably not the best day to call but he did manage to find out what was happening.
Seems like some parts have been changed but they haven't used it to see if its fixed it or not.
"Fine, I'll have it back and let you know!!" :thumb

So as yet I haven't any idea if its sorted but its soooooooo good to be back on my bike :clap:clap:clap:clap Even if I did take it without them having time to clean it!

Range says 72 miles left. I'll use it as normal and see what happens.

Sorry for the lack of detail as in the parts changed, I should get a list of everything that's been done when they start back on Tuesday!

I've heard mentioned, control unit, low fuel pressure, instrument cluster and the complete tank assembly of another bike being tried to name but a few :eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek:
Oh, and something like "WFE", what ever that may be.

Speak soon.
With good news I hope.

Cheers
Tony

Thanks for the update. Hope it's sorted and that they know WHY!

Could the 'WFE' have been the 'FPC' (Fuel Pump Controller)?
