Have seen this on ebay and thought all lights were the same just turned,

BMW R 1150GS 2000 model Main beam headlight (European) in perfect working order, I have replaced mine with a uk headlight. it can be fitted in 5 minutes ideal if your going touring across europe or if you twist the light in its frame it points in the right direction for the uk roads although the "top" symbol on the headlight will point at a quarter to three the M O T man failed me on this fact thats why I bought a new one, Just to clarify its the big headlight out of the two which includes the lense housing plus the bulb its all one unit there are no cracks or damage and its in perfect working order

No, he's right. For (presumably) aesthetic reasons, BMW produse a RHD and a LHD version of the GS dipped headlamp, despite the fact that they are both capable of being converted to being used the other way.

It'd have to be a pretty twattish MoT examiner to fail on that - after all, the beam pattern is correct, he's presumably failing on it having the wrong E number on it. What a git.

So how do you tell if yours is a right or left pattern?

Look at the beam pattern (on your garage wall?). If it's flat, with an angled 'kick up' to the left, it's set for RHD, if the kick up is to the right, it's set for LHD. The 'kicked up' part of the beam is designed to illuminate the nearside verge - if wrongly set, it'll dazzle oncoming traffic. Well, it would if the light was good for anything, anyway...

If it's set for RHD and the rectangular part of the headlamp lens is straight (ie the long side of the rectangle is parallel to the ground), you have a RHD headlamp set for RHD.

Ok, that all makes sence, but my bike is an inport and the light was for the first twelve months, turned (rectangle at an angle) but I felt the light was not right, so I have turned it so the rectangle is parallel to the ground (uk), the kick is to the left of the beam now and with the 50% bulbs in , on the way home the other night, I was going around a left bend and the oncomeing car was  due to the light in there face.
Is it that I have a RHD light in and am lucky as it should have been a left, or are the bulbs that good :D (Hella 50%+ ask BTBR).

Next question when is my MOT due when the bike was made and registered or when on the log book first registered in the UK:confused:

Errm, isn't this a 'laws of physics' moment? ;)

Whatever beam pattern is coming out of your headlamp, oncoming traffic are going to see a brighter light if the bike is leaning to the left on a left hand bend, because they'll be entering the area illuminated by your beam pattern - it's not a function of your headlamp, but of the position of your bike...

Details of the beam pattern requirements can be found in the on line copy of the MoT examiner's manual here - I'm sure it'll have details of when your bike is due for test if you do a search through it.

Mike:)
