Importing a BMW

First thing I'll say is that the following happened in 1982.

Right then.

I bought an R100RS from Paddy Maddock Motorcycles, Bray,(?), by Dublin. It paid something like £2,800 total for it, including vat at 10%(?) and Car Tax, I forget how much that was. The UK price at that time was £3,600. The price included hazard flashers, heated grips and pannier racks.

I did do a lot of research before taking the plunge, but in the end it turned out to be a doddle. I asked the lady at the Customs in Holyhead if many bikes were imported like mine and she said that mine was the first, although there were streams of cars being imported on the same boat. I kept an ear open for a few years after that but I never heard of anybody else bringing a bike in like that even though I told a lot of bikers of the savings to be made. I think what I did was bringing it in as a 'Personal Import', as I first purchased it and registered it in Eire.

I've no idea if it would be worthwhile to try it again; no doubt EU membership will have changed things a lot, but I really would be interested if there's anyone thinking of giving it a try.

I've looked at a few german sites and they seem to cost more than uk bikes, without the VAT! I can't remember which country are the cheapest. I think its a way I may go if the saving is enough.... I've been looking around for about 3 hours now!

In October 2004 the cheapest country to import from was Denmark by quite a margin.
