EWS again!!!

Just got back from Shetland 2 days ago and now the bike won't start. Comes up with EWS on the display meaning it's immobilised and the spare key won't work either. BMW Assist contractor who came with a flat bed truck to pick it up (wouldn't let him take it and told BMW Assist to send a proper bike trailer tomorrow) said it's very common with BMW bikes and cars!

Do we think it could be the sensor ring around the ignition lock?

Ah yes, this happened to me before at 1300kms. Dealer ordered new computer chip from Germany. No problems since. Currently at 15000Kms.

mine done it at 12000 miles,only problem i ever had,but when you switched the bike on and off it cleared and did start,rode it to dealer and got it sorted

Happened first time when leaving ferry on Wednesday morning and switching on and off worked then and it did it a few more times but always worked again until last night. BMW Assist taken the bike this morning and lent me a car (although they needed prompting for this because they promised one first thing but then forgot to arrange it!). Now spending my weekend at a Harley Rally in a car which has spoiled all the fun because after telling all my Harley riding mates to buy a proper twin I'm taking a lot of stick . Just got to phone the dealer to see if the bike will be ready for next weekends planned bike rally. Oh and the bike is 3 months old and done 13000km.

Also I would have thought for a bike designed to go around the world on an immobiliser that can't be bypassed in anyway is kinda stupid?

My ten year old Honda car has a similer "chip in the key" immobiliser thingy, that has worked perfectly for................ten years...

OK, the key/sensor doesn't get wet, but............................

C'mon BMW, sort it.................

I had this problem once. Dealer diagnosed the problem over the phone so it must be a fairly common fault.

I also once had EWS display when I rode past a mobile phone transmiter thar was being tested by engineers . A friend once couldn't unset his imobilser when he was parked outside a taxi office because of their radio transmitter. Pushed the bike around the corner and it was OK

Got bike back from dealer this afternoon. The "ring antenna" was replaced (the circular bit around the ignition). Was told it doesn't fail often! Does anyone know a way of bypassing the immobiliser (the dealer says no)? I mean what happens if it fails somewhere obscure like Africa somewhere? It seems stupid to me that a whole bike can be immobilised because of a stupid electronic fault.

I would be suprised if there was a way to by pass the immobiliser, the whole purpose of the thing is to prevent the bike being started without the key.

Having said that I can understand the bit about being stranded somewhere.

If in fact it can be done, please don't post how on a public forum

Yes I agree not to post on a public forum - I just want to know if it's possible for a start. I'm sure it must be possible to bypass it somehow.
