Hi All

I'm new to the site but and would be grateful for some advice.

On reading some threads concerning the early MK1's there appears to be issues with the EWS system and the right hand cylinder head dropping a valve.

I understand there is a way to bypass / get you home trick for the EWS system, only I cant find it using the search bar.

What are the causes for the right hand cylinder head dropping a valve ? timing chain tensioner ?

I have a 2004 GS with 47k on the clock maintained by myself , the only problems I have had are the throttle potentiometer dying and a leaking seal between engine and gearbox.

Any help or advice would be appreciated

Regards

Jon

Jon, the ews problem affected mostly 2006 models as I recall, solved by fitting a new ring antenna around the ignition lock, the improved part number ended in 247.

The workaround is to carry a spare EWS ring antenna plus the plastic wallet key and a roll of tape. If the antenna fails, simply tape the spare plastic key into the new one and then swap the wiring connectors, then start the bike using the metal key in the ignition barrel. It'll get you home.

Valve failure is due to the exhaust valve head snapping off at the weld with the valve stem. Most probably caused by overheating of the valve through lean running and/or insufficient valve clearances.

Leaking gearbox seals was common on 2004 bikes, mine were done under warranty within the first year, along with final drives, front engine covers corroding, fuel pump controller failure etc etc.

A dropped valve will take out the cylinder. The bike might get home on the other one but will probably suffer even more damage.

Get the bike remapped and if really worried about the valves have the exhaust valves changed for new ones. Someone like MikeyBoy from this parish will do the job for reasonable money.
