Hi i have a 2006 r1200gs. Of late on occasion the dash has displayed an EWS warning light and failed to start. On ringing the dealer they put it down to lack of charge in the battery. After fully charging the battery it was fine for a while. The fault then became intermittent, with after leaving it for a bit or a bit of fiddling it starting. Now it appears to have totally given up,charging of battery not helping. a. could this just be a sh***ed battery? b. Is this an immobiliser fault that is going to cost me my life`s savings to get fixed at the dealer?

no,its probs the ring/pick up around the key hole, easily replaced and not expensive.
cheap and easy to fix.

There was a known issue with the EWS antenna on all BMWs manufactured between 2006 and 2008. At the time BMW replaced this antenna with a newer type FOC. It could be that you have one that was never changed, if so you may have a case to have them replace it FOC, you can only ask. However, if it is the newer type EWS then you'll probably have to pay, as said, it's not too expensive.

P.s. I believe the newer part number back in 2008 was 61 35 7 705 247 (although it may have been updated again since then).
Here is an interesting post regarding the failure, and another thread here giving some history and a picture of the EWS antenna location in post 69.
