EWS Reader Coil Failure

Has anyone actually examined the faulty reader coil to see what has actually failed. Some seem to think it is down to water ingress. Is it corrosion on the terminals or does the coil itself fail, as in open circuit?

Can happen on brand new bikes so it can't always be due to corrosion or water ingress, which is normally the cause of electrical failures on motorcycles.

My guess would be its down to poorly manufactured components in this case the ring antenna itself although it completely mystifies me how BMW can let this problem persist for years without being able to sort it out.
