What does "EWS" on the display mean ?? (when nothing happens pressing the start button)

Thanks........ I'm very close to putting a match to this yoke!!

This happened the day I collect the bike after getting a new drive shaft and final drive. (today)

I had that issue once, waited a few seconds, turned the bike off/on removing the key completely and haven't see it ever again (knock on wood).

So fingers crossed lad!

Might be sucking eggs, but you only have one ignition key on the keyring don't you? It can upset the electronics if the ring antenna sees the two keys.

Does turning it on and off again change anything?

The early bikes had problematic EWS ring antennas, solved with an uprated part ending in 247.

It has only happened the once so far but the way things are going for me......... it's a sign of immanent failure!!

(yes, only the one key)

Buy a spare EWS ring and keep it under your seat .

Recall reading a thread where this is a common occurance.

As a get you home unplug the defective unit and plug in the new ring, cable tie it near the old ring so it sees the key,

start bike as normal.

repair / replace the defective one whan you get home

Check the part number on your ring antenna, if the last 3 are 247 then don't worry about it, put it down to a once off ;-)

ISTR the early ring antenae were also adversely affected by the loop systems used on garage forecourts; but as pointed out above, an updated part solved the issue.

Would the magnet in a subwoofer affect it..... if it was a couple of feet from the front of the bike??

Story that did the rounds at the time was that BMW had been caught out by the demand of the R1200 and contracted the manufacturing of the early antennas to China.
Friend had an R1200ST and the problem just got worse until it failed completely.
I would be looking at getting it changed unless you're feeling particularly lucky ;)
