Good evening all,
could you please give me your opinions on the effectiveness or otherwise of the exhaust spanners linked below. They are potentially for use on an '89 R100GSPD. Or perhaps there is another way of removing the exhaust nuts simply without breaking the fins off that I don't know about. I've tentatively tapped them with a hammer and chisel, but they rang like a bell and gave the impression of not wanting to budget easily. Your thoughts please.

I have a cheap aluminium one that slips and is useless.

I also have one like the second example. Got it from Siebenrock in Germany. Just looked and they are selling them for £25.00. There will be post to add but still a lot cheaper.
 
When I've seen them in use, they've been more like the 55 quid one.

It's got more teeth and therefore better for removing and tightening the nuts.

Also, as you probably know, if they don't move easily, you're better to cut them off and replace them, rather than stripping the threads off your heads.

If you think you need to extend the arm for extra leverage to undo the exhaust nuts then its better to cut them off with a chisel and but new ones. If you continue to increase the force to undo the nuts, then the chances are that when they do come undone the treads on the heads will be destroyed resulting in an expensive repair.

Like has already been said, if they are stuck cut them off and dont damage the threads on the head.
Clean up the head and lube the new nuts and head with anti seize and screw them on not much more than hand tight.
Then remove clean and relube them at every oil change.
I made a spanner from a cheap two leg sprocket puller.
The type with a collar which cams down and holds the legs in place is best, and I filed the legs and spindle to fit neatly between the fins on the nut.
Works fine and I never found a sprocket it would pull so it was no loss.
 
I have the same problem on my R90s. And thought the only way forward looks like to cut off the nuts, however lots of penetration oil, WD-40 and heat from the brazing torch made all the difference. Took up to 1 hour aside but I managed to rescue the exhaust nuts as well. Just take it easy and they will come off eventually moving them both anticlockwise and clockwise just a little bit at a time.

Thanks for the input guys. I went for the heavy duty Motorworks item in the end.
Incidentally, are you all aware of a chap called Chris Harris (Affordable Beemer Services LLC) on youtube, I'm sure you are.
He's got plenty of good videos concerning airheads including one that addresses the exhaust nut cutting issue.
