The little 83 st I found had been standing 10 years. I've resurrected it with all round fluid changes, fork seals, new braided brake hose and have adjusted the head race bearing which was very loose. The bike now starts, goes and stops well enough but when I let out the clutch especially in lower gears there is a popping from the exhaust. Thought it might be the HT leads so I've replaced them and new plugs as well but the noise is still there. Any ideas what I should check next?

They all do that sir!

Like toadjam says check for air leaks and it may just be down to the collector box or the innards of the tail pipe rotting as they do

IF the exhaust rings are tight DO NOT FORCE THEM OFF!

You will wreck the threads on the head and require an expensive repair

If they are tight? drill a series of small holes across back to front and split them with a good sharp chisel and they should spin off by hand

Mine did this for ages, I did all the usual stuff to try to sort it, seals, gaskets etc, but I think it is carb related, when I rebuilt the carbs and had them sonic cleaned, it made it all a lot better, but it still does it occasionaly. As said above, they all do that sir.:thumb

Thanks

Thanks lads! I will run through some checks as soon as I can. Great wee bike all the same. Real pleasure to drive.
