My 06 ADV 2 year warranty expired a month ago and as I had not received a note about extending it, I called Motorrad.
They were very pleasant but said they could not renew it as it had not been taken out before the original had expired.
Slightly taken aback, I pointed out that I had not been notified and was being dissadvantaged by this.
The best they said they could do was to consider my case if the dealer carried out, at my cost, an Approved Used Bike Check on my machine and it was given a clean bill of health
They confirmed they had sent a renewal but to an old address that I had vacated 7 months ago. Appearantly my dealer had not updated the Motorrad database.
I feel really let down by this as none of it has been of my doing and am suffering by it.
Has anyone else had this problem and if so what help did they get from the dealer or where else can you go for a similar extended warranty.

It's an insurance backed policy, so the insurer (not BuMW) sets the rules.

You missed the inception date by a month (1/12 of the policy period to be exact)....of course it's not your fault...but it's hardly the insurer's either....as to whether you informed BuMW of your change of address, only you know...Of course you knew your bike was going out of warranty, or were you waiting for BuMW to tell you?

Now, what to do?

Sharpish, get yourself down to BuMW. They were doing free 'health checks' on BuMW bikes. That should be good enough to tick most of the boxes....along with your nice BuMW book and service history....fix anything that is wrong (wishing you had bought the cover) and all will, most probbaly be well....don't forget that the warranty will not cover brake pads etc. so don't moan that the insurer won't pay....they wouldn't have done, even if you had bought the cover on time.....

Nurse...Next please, nurse....

I dissagree, sorry.

If you bought the bike from them new.

Go to your dealer, inform them of the situation and politely tell them that you were unaware that you yourself needed to inform BMW that you had moved and that by telling them (the dealer) you had moved you assumed that correspondance would appear as it should.

Ask them to sort out the probvlem theyve caused and get the extended warranty in place, if they cant do that get them to provide you with the cover via an aftermarket firm like adelphi at their cost explain that it was not renewed because BMW sent the letter to the wrong address and that you hadnt realised that your warranty had expired.

Make sure that you see the dealer principle or owner, quite simply be polite but firm and tell them that you will not go away untill you are satisfied.

If all else fails, and I know this might sound corny and ott, tell them that you would like their response in writing so that you can forward on to Mottorad and Watchdog, and while you think of it your neighbour who just happens to be the editor of your local paper. Trust me it works.

Slightly similar position for me, I bought a bike where the warranty had been offered, but not taken up by the vendor. Some confusion over dates meant that the renewal date had passed when I bought the bike, so I paid £53 for a check-up at Barnstormer, this gave the all clear, so I got the warranty extension.

The dealer who sold you the bike should do the check, just in case it finds something that would been problematic, after all they are going to have to sort it for you aren't they?

Thanks for your replies.
I have emailed the Dealer Principle along your lines but not as elequently put as you.
The dealer knows the bike as it has just been in for its 40K service so hopefully if he is a good egg, will do the right thing.

There's a lot of If's in that lot.....

Matey hasn't told us IF he has had the bike from new....IF it's even been serviced....or indeed whether BuMW caused the problem. All that he said is that BuMW hadn't updated their records....just maybe (heaven forebid) he might have forgotten to tell them of his little move....? He does seem to have forgotten that the warranty had expired, after all.....

BuMW have told him how to sort it out, probably for little or no cost....
