Extending your warranties

Does anyone have any experience of extending the warranty with an independent?
BMW are quoting me £310, (£100 excess, includes BMW assist).

I've looked at some companies, (there are many), for quotes, these seam to average at about £200, (without roadside assistance).

I only use the bike in the summer for weekend trips and holidays abroad.

Someone mentioned the AA policy but I have no idea if it's any good. I know one thing if you do get the BMW one it ties you in to servicing with BMW I believe. I am interested in extending my warrantie in May but I know this topic has been covered before so try and have a search to see if it brings up anything.:beerjug::beerjug:
 
I was told that it doesn't have to be serviced by a BMW dealer but you must use original BMW parts.

I took it out for the 3rd year but to be honest, didn't bother with it for the 4th year. I say that because I feckin forgot:blast

The BMW cover is excellent and I wouldn't bother with the others. there standard of cover is rubbish. They are there for your sheckles and will try and get out of any claim. If you do go with a non BuMW one, make sure you read ALL the small print........

True with the new bike warranty but the extended warranty is an insured product which I am fairly sure insists on dealer servicing.
 
The Warranty Direct policy I looked at didn't need to have dealer servicing, as long as the garage is VAT registered. There was no excess either, and your choice to use BMW or your preferred service agent.

That's what I got told when I rang. The cost was just too much though in my opinion so decided to leave it.
 
I think motorcycles were not included in the block exemption that allowed cars to be serviced by non-franchise dealers (with some conditions) without affecting warranty. That could mean that a bike manufacturer can still insist on dealer servicing.
 
No idea about the extended warranty but the new bike warranty doesn't have to be dealer serviced. The book that comes with the bike states that BMW parts must be used and make and grade of lubricants must be stated in the invoice. I would be surprised if the extended one is any different and in my mind illegal if they did force you to that especially when they don't on the original waranty.
 
i have the bmw warranty and wouldn't bother grubbing around with the others. i suspect actually getting something fixed will be a lot easier if it's all kept in house.

i'm 99% certain bmw extended warranty requires dealer servicing. after this year, i'll be dumping the warranty and doing it all myself.
 
I have the extended BMW warranty (no excess £310) and do all my own servicing. I have had two warranty claims which were honoured with out question. Perhaps alot of itdepends on which dealer you use for the warranty claim.

Motorcycles were not included in the block exemption ruling, unlike trucks & cars. There may be changes..... don't hold your breath though.
 
I didn't extend the warranty on my first 1200 and just after its 3rd birthday, I suffered a failed ECU and gearbox driveshaft seal failure.

I have just received the invitation to extend the warranty on my 2nd 1200. Guess what I'm going to do this time?

Read it again:

The sentence with 'may' relates to compliance with the service schedule.

The sentence with 'must' relates all service and warranty work being carried out by an authorised BUMW Dealer / Workshop....

Not the same thing.....

I have to decide by the end of March whether to extend or not. My current thinking is to forget the extended warranty and do all my own servicing which I feel capable of doing. This will save me about £800 per year after costs which hopefully will pay for any repairs. Of course, if the final drive completely fails or other very expensive device I'm in for a big bill but I'm prepared to take that risk and look at the costs over a 3 year timeframe minimum.
 
Warrentee

I have a 2005 gs with full service via BMW - i have the exteneded warrentee and for me it gives me piece of mind if anything goes wrong.
Is it worth the money - to me yes - if away in europe . i know the bike will be fixed and i will be looked after well with replacement transport, hotel etc.
