That is an interesting type of shroud on top of the FF50s. What is it made of, how is it attached and does it make a difference?

Have the same setup but my wiring does not look quite that neat (no offence Tobers!)

Richie

The "light shrouds" are made from an A4 plastic folder from W H Smith that costs a whopping 83p! From that you could make at least 50 of them! I was quite amazed that the finish on the folder is a mirror of the FF50, so they blend together really well.

They are simply held in place with double sided tape thats all.

The reason that I fitted them was because the GSA screen is that bit wider than the std GS and it tends to suffer from glare of the FF50's when on main beam. The shrouds eliminated that 100%.

Much the same effect that the Touratech headlight protector has. Or should I say did until I cut the mountings down so that it fits under the silver cover.

Colt,

The light bracket is from MiGSel, but I understand that there is a supply problem at the moment?

The "Reyno" grill is so beautifully crafted and finished off, every GS owner should have one.

There was, but that's fixed now :)

If you need one, e-mail to [email protected] please.

Great job Alan!

Cheers,
Michel

MiGSel light bars are top quality, I would recomend them to anyone.

Thats a bloody good idea BTBR with those ''light shrouds''! When I flick on main beam I do get some light reflected off the screen (MRA with Tobonators). Looks like a trip down WH Smiths with my pocket money.:D

Try this to help you with the shape.....but be quick coz I am selling the design to Touratech!

Then they will have a fancy design added to the top of them and cost at least £20 a pair..........

And yet another vote for BTBR:D

Alan fitted my light setup for me this morning, fixed one or two niggling faults and possibly saved my life!!!
Previous owner had fitted 100/80W headlamp bulb which had almost totaly melted the electrics:eek:
Lights could have failed at any time....80MPH.....Country roads....doesn't bear thinking about.
As well as making an exelent job of fitting the aux lights Alan got stuck straight in and sorted the headlamp- new connector, non melty bulb ( 50% brighter 60/55W ) and sorted wiring.

Top service, top bloke and bottom prices.

Thanks again Alan

Ian

Many thanks Ian, pleasure to meet you.

Regarding the higher wattage bulb....... it just goes to illustrate exactly why you should NEVER fit these type of bulbs.

The OE wiring just will not take the extra load generated, and as you saw for yourself, it will melt the plastic plug due to the increased load on the earth wire.

It is fair to say that on this occasion you were very, very lucky not to have the headlight fail at night!!

Still.....you are all sorted now and thats the main thing.

Are these Hella FF100s or FF300s? I can't quite work it out from the picture. I've ogt the FF100s on the front of my car and a pair off FF300s sitting in the loft waiting to go on the 1200. I haven't offered them up yet, but I'm wondering if they're going to be a bit large......

They are FF100's, but very careful about adding lights to yer 1200, single wire nightmare. :o

Despite what other people have done, be very, very careful!

Yeah, I know, but thanks for that BTBR....:) I know a man who can do it properly, if anyone can. If he's happy with the results then I'm sure he could be persuaded to offer a fitting service to GSers in Scotland similar to the one you offer to more Southerly riders.

Do you think that using Nippy Normans Centech API kit will overcome the 1200 can/bus wiring sensitivity?

In a word........no!

Even if you wire direct back to the battery, there is potentially a problem with overloading the electrical circuit.

By its design, the "system" knows what current is being drawn and where it is being drawn from, therefore if you go adding extra lights that draw 10 amps for example, the system will suspect that there is a fault and shut down.

It will keep on doing this until such time that it has found the "fault" or stop the bike which ever is the sooner!

Why do you think some after market alarm companies have given up trying to get thier systems to work on the 1200?

There is only one correct way to add lights to any Kan-Bus system and that is by adding the software to read the pulses required to switch the lights on or off!

Lights

Thanks .

Where will I find the information/software to wire a pair of FF50s up? I know that the auto switch I had on my GSA is not suitable for the 1200. But I do not want to fit a separate on/off switch.

Any ideas or perhaps I should wait until the manufacturere of the autoswitch has developed one for the 1200 to be wired through the cancel indicator switch.

Regards

It is easy and safe to wire lights on the 1200GS.

Use a figure 8 cable to take power from the battery direct. Place an inline fuse in the + cable near the battery post. Run the cable along the loom to the front of the bike. Connect to a relay and power the lights (+ and -) from the relay.

Tap into the high beam headlight wire (before it enters the headlight shell) to trip the relay when high beam is used. The lights must not be earthed to the frame. If they are metal bodied and the body is earthed, then they must be insulated from the frame.

For running lights, run a second relay (use the same figure 8 cable - make sure you choose an adequate guage) and tap into the low beam headlight wire. Run your wires inside flexible conduit or equivalent and tie them out of harms way.

I added ultra-miniature toggle switches with waterproof hoods to the wire tapping the hig and low beam feed wires so I can switch the extra lights off. I fitted them next to the forward mounted accessory socket.

10,000 ks of regular use. No problems; no 'error codes'; and plenty of light.

Stephen

Thanks Stephen.

Not being a technophobe I think I will seek the expertise of a qualified techo to do it for me.. But I will show him your wiring ideas. I would hate to screw the bike up.

I've done almost exactly what stephenm describes to add two sets of extra lights (fogs and spots) to my 1200. I can't see any reason why wiring lights directly to the battery like this would cause problems. I've had theselights fitted for a couple of months now with no problems at all.

I think BTBR is being a bit over cautious.
