Hi Guys,

Anyone got any advice where to get an extra 128Mb or larger memory card for a SP III/ BMW Navigator at the best price??

Going on big trip soon and want an extra for the different countries.

Cheers guys:beerjug:

eBay might be the best place to look - it's probable that someone who has upgraded to a 266 meg chip will try to sell their original 128 meg chip there.

The other possibility is to just borrow (for the duration of your trip) a 128 meg chip from another BB member who has one. Perhaps if you buy a 32 meg chip on eBay (that would be really cheap, probably about ₤10), and offer to swap the 32 meg chip for the 128 for the duration of your trip - with the promise to reciprocate when the other guy needs your 128 meg chip for his big trip - you might be able to solve your problem without spending much money.

Isn't there a problem with borrowing cards because the SP III will not recognise the unlock code. I recently borrowed Littleredroosters SP III for a trip due to mine developing a fault and it refused to read my memory cards due to the unlock code. Fortunately Colin had loaded his card up with the maps that I wanted so I was ok.

Thanks for the quick reply Pan. I have a 128Mb so ebay may be the best place to get a second. I think if I have to go to the extra expense I may as well buy at least another 128.

Is there a bigger one for the SP III?

By the way, I subscribed on Fri to become a 'Forums Sponsor' but to date nothing has come up on my user ID.

Cheers

Elvin, try www.aspidshop.com, I have just got my new 2610 off them cheapest place around.

I looked on there site 128 MB 64.58 plus vat, 256 £131.45 plus Vat for the SP111.

256 is the biggest you can get for the SP111 I understand

Good luck

There is no problem borrowing memory cards. But you must rewrite the maps using your own unlock code. The maps are locked to the GPS device and not to the memory card.

If you borrow a GPS device you must also borrow the unlock code and install it on your computer. I have codes from several friends installed simultaneously on my computer so the cards I create can be moved between our GPS devices without problems.

Carry your unlock code with you when you travel! Then you can update your maps wherever you find a computer with MapSource installed.

HMR makes a good point - there is nothing at all wrong (illegal, contrary to software licence, etc.) with installing your unlock codes on someone else's computer. In fact, it's a great idea to copy (back up) your unlock codes onto a floppy disk - 100 different unlock codes will fit on one floppy, with room to spare - and take the disk with you when you make long trips. That way, if you want to reload a new mapset on your chip using someone else's computer, you will have your unlock codes with you, and you can just load them and use your friend's computer.

This assumes, of course, that your friend is using the same product (CN, CS, MG, etc.) and the same version number of the product as you are.

To back up your unlock codes to a floppy, open the MapSource application, then go to the UTILITIES menu, and select "unlock maps". In the next dialog that appears, choose "export codes." The wording might be slightly different, depending on the version of the MapSource application you are running, but the idea is the same for all versions.

PS to Elvin: On my computer, the words "forum sponser" show up under your name, so your registration did go through. You might need to clear your browser cache in order to get a fresh view on your computer.

Thanks Pan, I will do that. I fancy the 256Mb card, it's really all I would ever need for the SP III.

Thanks everyone for the advice.

Just for info I bought mine about 2 months ago from a Yacht Chandlery called 'Aladdins Cave' in Chichester for about £140.00. May seem a lot of extra money which some might decide best put towards a new 2610 instead, but if you use your SPIII for 'business' it makes sense... :D

As far as capacity goes it's a huge improvement over the 128MB version. If you're a UK user you'll get the entire UK plus a significant area of Northern France onto 1 card, even with the extra data of version 6 City Nav.
