Thanks for your response. Have checked the terminals on fpc and pump. Really clean. No sign of any corrosion or discouloration. The bike spends most of its time in warm climes and has never seen salted roads so bike has no corrosion anywhere. The bonus is if I ever need to use my FPC bypass I am confident I could install it by roadside with the toolkit I carry.
Incidently there is no cover on my fpc, is this normal for 2010 GSA. FPC is the later "black" one

Thanks for info on software. So BMW know the system is flawed, design a replacement (ie. go back to what they had before) and then write the software in such a way that it cannot be retro-fitted. Brilliant. 50 years ago an old engineer said to me "with mechanical machines its usually the electrics that go wrong and with electrical machines it is usually the mechanical parts that go wrong." Nothing much changed in nearly 100 years then.

Intend when I have time to put this altogether in letter to BMW customer service. Will start new thread when I do so. Thanks again.

The fuel gauge/strip on my 2009 GSA is also faulty. I filled the tank with fuel yesterday but today I got the orange warning triangle and gauge showing empty. Not sure if it's really worth paying for it to be repaired if it's likely to fail again in the future.
 
Topped up with 13 litres today to fill the tank, and the warning light is still displaying, and showing empty. Even the range display says zero! So now I've got to remember the mirage each time I fill up so I can guesstimate when the tank is nearly empty. This bear is not a happy bear!:mad:

Just use the trip and reckon on 10 miles per litre of fuel.
 
Mine is working again ! All by itself. Anyone had this happen ? Its not worked for the last 2 fuel fills. I didn't even put any fuel in today. Had about 70 miles to go till empty working off the trip meter then it just started working whilst I was sat waiting at the lights. Thing is its booked in to get replaced under warranty as I had this one fitted a few months back.
 
Didn't fancy doing the diy fix using a piezo, so whilst mine was in at the stealers for the fuel pump recall I had them fit a new fuel strip (£179 total with 2yr warranty). Not cheap.
 
What P's me off about mine is not the fuel strip which was working fine last time I used the bike, but the trip mileage display that randomly resets itself to total bike mileage. Some folks will say its my fault for not allowing the self test to run, but why the feck should I have to? In any case, my self test runs sometimes and not others. It's completely random and it doesn't always reset the mileage display. Everything else is on the handlebar button so why not the miles trips?
 
What's the UK policy on warranty fixes? last year mine was diagnosed just before going out of warranty, and then fixed a week or so later (out of warranty but done by the dealer as fail was within insurance period). Just over a year later its gone again, on ringing the dealer I was told its only 1 year on warranty work that you don't contribute to and 2 years if I had contributed. Any ideas where I stand?
 
The new fuel strip that BMW fitted last month has failed today, I'm now back to having the empty tank warning triangle. The new strip lasted about 5 weeks. No doubt I'll have to keep getting a new one fitted every month!

My previous bike K-bike used to revert from Trip 1 at random to Total Miles. It also used to randomly move to a different item on the OBC mid-ride without me touching the info button. I replaced my 5yr old battery to rule out a problem there but it didn't help. These are probably the worst faults for a dealer as no error logs show and they don't like that. Anyway, off topic, but I thought I'd let you know BT you're not the only one to have experienced this!

On topic - I've only just joined the GSA clan and have yet to do my first fuel up. All I have noticed is that my bike went from 120 odd miles range to 40 miles inc. reserve light in about 20 miles! I prefer to rely on the trip metre, consistent filling, abacus, and old fashioned maths to work out what the bike's doing. So far that has worked pretty well for me as it tells me how accurate or not the fuel gauge is. If they're inconsistent then that's more of a problem.

I see BMW moved back to the float system August 2010 from looking at the Max Microfiche site for the GSA.
 
Watching the miles works for me but my bike has an annoying habit of switching back to total miles regardless of which trip I have selected. It's not failure to wait for the test/check routine as it happens when I've done that religiously. And anyway its still an annoying "feature". What's the most immediately important(?) total miles since new or the miles since I last filled the tank?

My 2008 Adventure fuel strip has worked fine for nearly 50K miles but this weekend its showing zero fuel regardless of tank contents. I'll check the wiring connectors because I have had the beak off to refit my Les Wassall headlight kit, but chances are, it's the fuel strip.

But even if there is a warranty option, my first check will be the contacts and 2nd will be a peizo zapper to reawaken the existing strip. If that fails I'll fit a spoofing circuit. Driving 30 miles each way for a BMW dealer to fit (and scrap) a new new strip seems rather pointless.

Make your own. Three quid for a panel mount cooker lighter off ebay, couple of bits of wire and spade terminals, some heat shrink tubing, job done.
