I think that is possible with quite a few bikes so it would certainly be a good option for some folk

Absolutely. It’s got same power but 20 ish kgs lighter than Himalayan 450 and that goes very well .
Why are some on here so obsessed with the weight of a bike whilst they waddle around with 20kgs of belly leading the way ? 🤔

Yup. It’s the same with camping gear, save a couple of hundred grams with a lighter tent costing hundreds and carry a large belly weighing twice your rucksack.

I pointed out to a friends son that he was carrying a 50kg person strapped to his chest and that’s why he couldn’t keep up with me going up hills.

But , of course, shedding 20kgs from your SOA helps with balance whilst heralding your arrival whilst one doth standeth on the pegs arriving at Dent 😜

Apart from the headlight assy, it looks alright.
Of course, the right paint job helps.
I do wonder what else is similar out there - if i was buying,
 
I was talking to an instructor from the BMW Off-road school at the NEC stand and he made 2 interesting points. The first was that he reckoned that the price would be £7-8k. He agreed that the price was crucial for the bike to succeed. The second was that he thought it would be fine offroad with 19/17 wheels, like the big GS has. This guy rides offroad all the time and clearly knew his stuff.

He also added that he couldn't wait to get his hands on one, he thought it would be great fun. The only thing that looked wrong on the concept bike was the plastic sump guard, but that's a easy fix.
 
...and having had a close look at the bike, it is almost production ready. There were no rough edges, but the rear subframe will need to be changed for one with sensible lights and a rack. I am really tempted, it looks like a cracking bike.

The Off-Road school guy knows better than me, however, it's the standard off-road to have a 90/90 x 21 front, or something very close. By the look of the front tyre in the picture, that front looks too wide for the job.

Also, as discovered on another thread, where I made myself look stupid inventing tyres in sizes that don't exist, you can't get the range of off road tyres in a 17" rear. Look at the acclaim that Ducati had with the DesertX for having 21/18 wheels. Nearly all of the new mid-range and smaller off road oriented bikes are doing the same. Do BMW do a proper off-road bike anymore? Don't want to be controversial, but I don't get it.

This is a shame for what could be an excellent bike, but as we've seen, you have to match the competition. Which other true off-road capable 450s are running 19/17 inch wheels?

Perhaps they'll use the purchase of KTM to do the off-road stuff.
 
The 800GS is £10000 the 310GS is £5890. Somewhere in between? Or they drop the 310. Pricing will be everything.
Think they have just ceased production of 310 so perhaps 450 is its replacement 👍

Some more recent pre-production shots ruthlessly stolen from an Indian bike site..

Looks quite small so may be more suited to the shorter rider. I'd certainly want it in the HP colourshceme and spoked wheels if I was to ever consider one.

That low slung exhaust is also disappointing but I guess needed if they plan on adding pannier frames to it?
 
Looking back at the magazine write-up on post 1, what happened to the "back to the future GS" planned for earlier in 2025—a "distilled version influenced by the original 1980s GS"?

And the "125-degree crankshaft for the ignition" apparently is an Indian design from TVS. There’s ambiguity whether that’s an exact crankpin spacing, an ignition timing phrasing, or a some form of press shorthand, but it looks like it's ignition timing.

The popular 270º timing as used in the Yamaha MT-07 would produce 270º/450º (450º being 720-270). However, a 125° timing would result in an extremely uneven (big-bang style) spacing of 125º/595º (720-125) which might be very interesting noise-wise, but would undoubtedly need to be counterbalanced to avoid vibration.
