Hi All,

I'm rebuilding my brothers F650GS Dakar single spark from the pile of bits he left it in, in our mums garage. And i've encountered problem number one.

I've had the engine out so I could paint it (Halfords brush-on engine enamel FTW), and got chatting with bro about the bike before he decommissioned it. He mentioned that it was making an 'Intermittent rattling noise, which lasted a few seconds, and didn't seem to be rev dependent', and so I decided to investigate.

I assumed chain tensioner, which I read to be problematic on these, so had it out, it looks fine (In one piece), spring is nice and hard, ball valve works OK. Pulled out the front blade, and I think that must have been replaced at some point as it looks pretty new (Bike has 35k miles on the clock). The decompression mech has its spring in place, and doesn't seem damaged either.

So I turned the engine over from the allen socket on the side, and tried to get the alignment marks to match so I could check the valves, but they wont:

They seem pretty close, but even after turning the engine over a few times, they wont get any closer than this.

Is this simply cam chain stretch, or do I need to be looking somewhere else? The valve lift on all 4 valves seems quite wide anyway at this timing, but the engine has been sat without much oil in it for ~3 years, and I don't think it was serviced for a while before that.

Ideas on a postcard to...

Thanks

T
