I have a 2008 f800gs and the range counter tells me anywhere from >100 too >118 miles left when I fill it to full.

I know, that If i fill it to full I get 240ish miles before it will be empty, or very close to.

Why doesnt the bike give me a range of 240 rather than just '>100' etc...

My dads 1200gsa tells him the approximate exact millage left.

Hopefully this makes sense.

Do all the f800gs do this, or has this been fixed in later models? If so, is there a software update that can be done? ..or?

To be honest I'd most likely not do anything about it anyway.. it would just be nice to know.

Cheers :beerjug:

On my old GS it was the same as yours, it can even go up to 148> when your doing over 70mpg. Its the same throughout 2008 and 2009 and i believe some 2010's. Now in the later models you no longer have the > sign you just have a miles to empty. (Different to the GS or GSA though)

I hope that answers your question. If not Micky will be along soon no doubt and knows everything about the F800GS. :thumb

I had a 'loaner' F800GS from my local dealer a few weeks back and it didn't have a 'range' function at all - think it was a 12 plate. Although the whole fuel gauge thing of staying 'full' and the leaping down to half- empty in one fell swoop was a bit annoying, I quite liked the range indicator on my 09 F800GS. I assume it has been removed :nenau

Fuel gauge

I bought an 09 F800gs recently and have struggled so far to 'familiarise' myself with the fuel gauge i even thought it was faulty and removed it from the tank for a mess.... before i did search on the net and found the reams of info on the subject. From what i've seen and read the shape of the tank and the position of the sender/float inside means that the fuel level in the tank has to drop to drop to between between half and 2/3's say before the float/sender starts to drop from its max/full position and start dropping to show a reading. Hand book says the computer can't tell how much fuels in the tank when its completely full hence readings of > (at least more than xxx miles). Also says with regard to range its based on average consumption readings stored in the system. I rang the previous owner who explained that it does work o.k and will evenually drop in increments down to the fuel light coming on but that for it to be accurate he always reset the 'avergage consumption' after filling up. With the sender removed from the tank and operating the float to the empty position manually i still couldn't get the fuel gauge reading to drop from the full position but then i refitted it all drained most of the fuel from the tank pressed the reset button & any other buttons in the vicinity a few times and it suddenly showed a couple of 3 bars up from the bottom of the gauge so i'm hoping its all o.k

It must be daunting for the first time (test rides and loan bikes etc)looking at the readings fall away go up and down and settle

But once you know the bike and its range: :thumb

lotts here http://www.ukgser.com/forums/showthread.php?t=146375

I dont see it as a problem, most of my fuel stops I just top up 12 to 13 litres on average.

Have found the true range by running dry beyond the light (I got 20 odd beyond the light) until it cuts out (and yes the pump stops and there is no noise) I see the indication as a rough gauge and on long runs its backed up with a fuel gauge set on the garmin with a reduced true target range.

So the full to half tank digital dancing does not bother me as I know its full to half anyway and that is accurate enough for me, seeing the light is the final warning :thumb2

I once ran mine down to 9 miles left in tank and only put 16l into the tank.
I ignore the countdown until it displays with the fuel light. I have also found it is quite accurate if all the data is reset at each fillup.

Cheers for the replies everyone :)

It makes sense considering the shape of the tank.

Doesn't really bother me now, its just something I wanted to know.

Thanks
