I was stunned when I was told the clutch drive plate, driven plate and gadget will cost £650 in parts and labour another 1-2 hours. Is there a cheaper alternative to these BMW parts?

Bloody OUCH. How old is/how many miles has the bike got on it??? I suppose if it was still in warranty you wouldnt be asking questions like this. I do know of a guy in Peckham who has had his clutch replaced on his 800 at 16000 miles, but dunno why. All I know is he didnt have to pay for it...

Its 2009, 27, 000 miles. To be honest the way I feel I won't be buying a BMW again. Also their labour charge is plain greedy nearly £100 per hour. I'm assuming its outside warranty as that's just 2 years? Any other option for parts? Or is it just BMW?

feel free to tell me to feck off, but has the bike been regularly serviced by a BMW dealer??. if it has then you could do worse than ask them for a good will gesture with the clutch. 27000 miles is hardly mega miles. Theymight tell you to get tae feck, or they might well offer a part payment deal where they will pay some of it and you pay the rest. If they wont play ball then contact BMW customer services and see what they say, but there is every chance customer (DIS)services may also tell you to get tae feck. Failing that, there will probably be an independent BMW specialist somewhere near where you live who might be a bit more reasonable than BMW. Im told they have massive prices because they have massive overheads like showrooms, well trained technicians (really) and huge amounts of tea biscuits and cake to provide for their customers........

Nuff said........

Mark.

I've got another garage who can do the work but are there non BMW parts available for this? If so where?

A clutch kit from Motorworks is 208GBP, I don't know how long it takes to rebuild, but 650 is not cheap but it does not sound totally unreasonable, depending if there is some extra work they need to do.

Talking about unreasonable; buy a Triumph on the Continent and have it serviced.... cheapest service I ever had was 300€ for the small service.

Check carefully if you really need all those parts. I was told (but have not verified) that you can buy just the plates and single plates, as well.
You might want a second opinion from the shop that can do the job independently. But since they have the side cover off, you might be looking at a new gasket for now.
See what the parts counter guy says when you get the info from the independent shop and you might save yourself a pot full of money.:aidan

Are you saying the clutch kit including those parts I mentioned are £208 rather than from BMW at £650?

That's no mileage at all

I am not surprised at those prices, have you seen the price of brake pads? At the last service I had Brian (an Indie) tried to convince me to go for new pads AND discs!! He said they were on their limits. I checked the pads when I got home and there was loads of meat on them, the rear never gets used! I wonder whether he gets a nice discount on the parts..:nenau

If I were you I would look elsewhere. I am going to have the minimum amount of work done by a dealer (valve clearances and plugs every 24k), and do the rest myself.

Good luck with the clutch.

Rich

Even lower mileage ........

I've got a 2009 that I've owned since new. I don't get much opportunity to ride but when I do it's mostly offroad / green laning.

Been going back to the same dealer every year.

Last year service and MOT they called me up and said clutch was cooked ........... 5,100 miles!

Yes, you read that right FIVE THOUSAND miles.

They said that it was "probably because you ride so much off road" - this evidenced by the deep scratches in bash plate, torn knobblies and other such evidence - I don't abuse the bike .........it is a dual-sport after all.

I was in no position to argue - I wouldn't have had a clue what to look at although from my perspective the bike had been functioning just fine. However, my mate that normally rides with me had cooked his clutch on his XT660 tenere TWICE in 10,000miles and he's a lot more mechanically minded than me (to the extent that he replaced his own clutch the second time around as it was out of warranty) so I thought it was feasible, even if not plausible - I'd be interested in the opinion of the off-roaders on here as to what their life expectancy is on their clutches??

Anyway - the main reason for the post is that I've just dug out the paperwork and the dealer charged me £278 including both parts and labour to replace the clutch - they said that if they weren't doing the service and MOT at the same time then it would have been far more expensive.

I've checked motorwerks and that eBay link above for clutch kit don't mention clutch plate or driven plate. I'm sure these kits include the parts I need?

Scuba You know what strip the fricking thing and see what needs replaced or doesn't! Don;t stand poncing about from foot to foot going "what if?"

Until you have it in your hand and can say yes those plates are badly worn and these plates are burned Yes So I will get a complete kit and have done!

But See when you have the thing apart remember to check the action and make sure that the needle rollers and cable and lever are all free Parts Link to Motorworks Here's a Microfiche for the Side casing with clutch actuation parts LINK and here's one for the clutch pack itself LINK

When it's back together make sure there is free play at the lever so that it's not always dragging

Oh and change the oil and filter while you are at it It's full of burned clutch residue!

The BMW G650 X series have had clutch issues too, if used extensively off road & they are Rotax engines too

I think the problem is that they are roadbike engines put into offroad styled bikes

To my mind they are too high geared probably in the primary gears & thus more clutch action is required than other bikes

Hmm That seems to have made things go quiet

Anyone care to tell me why you would need to change the whole clutch basket ???

Even the DR600 managed without that malarchy ???

It's probably not Motorrad SOP to take a file to the basket fingers the way the average mech would...

I've decided to get the 650 + labour repair done, 1-2 hours I'm told. Its being done by a local garage I've not used before. Should I get a second opinion first from a BMW dealer? Problem is they are further away awkward to get to and labour is double the price. I guess its a question if trust...

Half the problem is folks lack of mechanical intelect. I've lost count of the amount of bikes I've seen that have a clutch lever adjusted like a guitar string. This obviously will wear the clutch out quicker.
The job will more than likely require a set of friction and metal plates and a clutch cover gasket. An hours work and thats being generous.

Its more a lack of mechanical interest, I'd rather be playing golf or sometime. I'd prefer not being ripped off though
