My f800gs gives a second and a half timing chain(?) rattle particularly from cold ,to a lesser extent when warm/hot.Asked about this at dealer a while ago who told me 'they do it -nothing to worry about.' Bike has done 10,500 and is 3 yrs old.It has begun sounding generally more rattly top end.Just wondered if anyone else come across this - apologies if earlier thread -did try a search.Any thoughts would be most welcome. Cheers,Oggie

This seems to be a problem as time goes on with the cam chain tensioner mechanism (hydraulic tube and spring).
I ordered one set (tensioner and spring) almost 10 weeks ago and, at first, was told it was discontinued and the factory would no longer offer the parts. They later retracted that statement for obvious reasons and told me the piece was being re-designed and would be manufactured and offered for sale at some point in time. The BMW parts supply problem has been addressed previously, and in some countries, Motorrad does not supply the part, you cannot get one unless you order it from another country. I was told (but I don't put a lot of faith in this) that the new design had a new price (no surprise there) but it seemed to incorporate the spring as part of the new design.
I am still awaiting delivery of the piece and it is now 2 and a half months.
On some other forums I have mentioned this and plan on doing a complete A-B comparison between the two pieces when I get the "new" one and take out my "old" one. I am changing it as a preventive maintenance measure. I, too, have been told that as long as the tensioner functions shortly after start up (it seems to bleed down when sitting awhile) there is no problem.
So, perhaps BMW have addressed this problem and are fitting a new design to the new model F8 and F7 bikes? Or perhaps they are simply bullshitting me because they have left the parts bin low and got caught out with no supply?
Who knows?

A guy on another forum mentioned how when he swapped his old tensioner out for a new one and a new spring (some of the early versions had either a weaker or shorter spring) he noticed how the oil flow holes didn't line up correctly on his original.

JR mentioned this:
"When I took my tensioner out to inspect the spring I noticed the cross-drilled "fill hole" was oriented at about 9:00
(likely installed at random)

The oil inlet and outlet holes to the tensioner bore are located at about 2:00 and 4:00 so when I reinstalled the tensioner I placed the fill-hole at about 3:00.

I swear the start-up rattle is now shorter in duration... but have no hard data on it ... "

Yep mine rattles more than normal when first press of the button, goes away after 30-40 seconds...
it takes a while for the oil to get to the top of the engine

Mine's done it since day one, now nearing 37K, and no worse or better!
The ST I had before it was the same :)

Same here. Especially from cold and when it's been stood for a while and a slight flickering of the oil pressure light for a millisecond. Its done it for ages

f800gs cam chain rattle

Thanks good peoples.Didn't think it was my imagination.Methinks a return to the dealer is on the cards to investigate the modified replacement -if it exists! Other than this issue really love the bike - does as it says on the tin. Thanks again peeps,Oggie.:beerjug:

Oggie, it will be interesting to hear what your dealer says about the supposed replacement. I am beginning to think it is BS that Motorrad told me when they got caught with no supply.

cam chain rattle

Spoke to dealer last week.He said sounds like cam chainissues.I asked about modified tensioner. He said don't believe everything you read.He asked me what year is bike.? I said 09.He said could be stretched cam chain.Surely the tensioner takes care of this. - or has the chain stretched too far? Fortunately I have taken out extended warranty and they are going to have it in to investigate....watch this space.Cheers peeps

Having bought the "new" cam chain tensioner I can tell you it is BS on the part of Motorrad. All they did was bundle the spring, hydraulic tensioner, cap, and washer as a package and screw the consumer. They put the price up on the new parts bundle, as well.
Funny how Motorrad only offers extended warranties in the 1st world, if you run a BMW in the 3rd world you are shite out of luck. :rob
Be interesting to see what the dealer finds.
On the ADV forum, there is a thread with part numbers for a DIY cam chain change without dropping the motor, the procedure uses a masterlink and it seems to be working well by those who installed the masterlink and new chain.

Same here. First second and a half. Noticed it more from about 10,000 miles though.

Same here, mentioned to dealer and told it was fine. On the 800s the oil light comes on with ignition and goes off after you have started engine.

camchain rattle

Ok, have had bike in for warranty check. They say bike is fine. The startup noise I'm hearing is apparently normal. As a matter of interest (or not) I was informed by Service Manager that soon BMW will be changing the oil they use to a more viscous grade. -too many engine rattles? I shall keep up extended warranty for a while yet! Cheers peeps for your thoughts on this issue, Oggie

Everyone keeps mentioning (blaming) the camchain. It sounds more like valve train to me? I think it is just a short while whilst the oil circulates. However, as I said earlier it goes away quite quickly, so nothing to worry about.

Rattle

My F800gs developed the rattle about 13,000, so good to hear it is normal having changed the oil twice. I was starting to get a little worried.

Had the cam cover off and checked the valve clearences they were also fine. Noticed in the manual the cam chain tensioner so took that out to check, all was fine.

*Beware* The cam chain tensioner is a bitch to get back in I manged to put it back in cross threaded. Its located at a slight angle and being behind the frame its hard to see. The only option was to remove the engine and put it on a bench to screw it back correctly. It took two days and manged to get it all back together. Cam chain tensioner re-threaded its self. MY ADVICE DONT REMOVE THE CAM CHAIN TENSIONER.

Ghost, the cam chain tensioner is simple, a piece of cake to take out and replace. Take off the little side cover. Put the bike in 6th gear, bump it to TDC by feel or simply remove the left side case bolt and look for the TDC cut mark notch with a penlight.
The cap will now be easy to screw in place.
Surprised nobody has mentioned this on here before, I learned it from the ADV G-Spot forum.
Thankfully, TDC is easier to find than a g- spot.
