At least, I think "pinking" is what I mean.

New bike - 300 miles or so on it.

Put about 160miles on it today. stopped for fuel after about 100 miles and I could hear a "tink" every 2 or 3 seconds while idling and there is a new high-pitched element to the engine noise while riding which I assume is the same thing but difficult to make out individual "tinks".

Is this serious or something I can live with until the first service?

Slow & steady gear change's & get to that 1k milage without blasting the throttle in each gear!! My F8GS is @13k nearly & going for it's second service & is a very noisey engine tippy-tapping & little rattle's. Ignore it & only ride semi-hard once bike engine upto temperature matey.

Mine had a rattle on tickover from about 3000 miles, which steadily got worse and have just had new pistons and barrells fitted at 8000. Have you got your dealer to listen to your rattles?

Engines DON'T 'pink' on tick-over, what you can hear is the exhaust cooling as it runs VERY hot due to this model having a cat' which runs at nearly 1000c, so don't worry - it's normal.
Enjoy your new bike... I know I do!

Russ ..

I have to agree with poster +2^ ...

Whining noises are generally not good unless you know you can track it down to something that you know - the noise made by the clutch with the lever in or out for example -

I'd get it up to the dealer and have them look at it...

Thanks for the thoughts everyone. I don't think it can be the exhaust as it wasn't happening while the engine was switched off. Definitely seemed to be something from the engine. Rode it again the day after just for a short trip and didn't hear it at all. So presumably its got something to do with temperature.

From what's been said, I figure its not going to kill it to get to the 1000k first service. So I'll do that and get the dealer to listen to it - unless it gets much worse of course.

Thanks again.

It doesn't sound like pinking.

Pinking normally starts when the engine is under load at low(ish) revs (up a hill in 4th for example). My F800GS started pinking in Morocco and continued to do so until i got back into Europe (bad fuel i guess).

My F800GS does make a sound from the engine rather like a tappit sound (if i spelt tappit correct). A ticking with the engine revs. It's up for it's 12K service any day now where they check the valve clearance. So i was going to leave it to BMW to comment/fix.

mine makes the tinkity tappy sound and I'm up to 27,000 miles. I think it is just the nature of the beast. I had my valvle clearances sorted the other day and it has improved somewhat.
