This is my fourth year back to biking. You couldn’t keep me off the bike the first couple of years – solo trips and long days out, whatever the weather, a born again feeling.
This year hasn’t been the same. Partly it’s because I moved house last year, and so I’ve busy around that. But also, when I have been out it's felt forced, and most rides somehow unsatisfactory.
Today, it didn’t really feel any different at the start. But was a crisp autumn day with clear skies, some great country roads I’d forgotten, and one of those days when it all clicks right from the off, when you actually feel part of the bike, totally in control, totally relaxed – corners taken on rails and in total command of your view.
As I peeled off from a roundabout and came to another set of lights on a two-lane highway, a Warwickshire Outlaw drew alongside on his Harly. I looked, half expecting to be looked down upon, but he gave me a very firm, respectful nod before we both moved on.
Couple more hours of great riding lay ahead until I returned home. I got off the bike with a spring in my step and couldn’t stop smiling.
I feel that I’ve fallen in love all over again.
So strange how you get these days when everything is totally top form.
