Farewell Tour

At 5 they’re back. The magic email appears and it’s game on. This isn’t a game he can stop when he likes. He has to swim into the system until he completely looses sight with land and then tread water. Blindly hitting да on screens full of random letters, having pictures done, entering endless codes in the phone, holding a camera and reading numbers out, signing pieces of paper, giving the phone to a couple of young women to let their fingers blur and set up the government app and the banking app and connecting a sim to the bank account and depositing money in an ATM and then suddenly land appears and he crawls out the water with a Russian SIM, bank account and government account in his name. Just what he always wanted👍

00000150-PHOTO-2026-06-30-17-36-34.jpg

There is method in his madness thought. A SIM gives him access to Yandex, the Russian Google, with its maps and taxi services etc, plus, if his tiny swede can work out how to use it properly, the bank card will let him book hotels online, maybe.

Job done and we can go. Say farewell. Roll out and never return:( It’s all easy to say..

Head out of town, past the queues at any fuel station with the nearest sniff of petrol and head east towards Lithuania. It’s warm, sunny and I’m purring along enjoying the scents of the harvest being brought in. I’m genuinely happy and I’m thinking how calm it is. I can see Africa and his mate behind, I can see empty road in front.

Then I stop at a supermarket. The bladder on my back is starting to leek and needs a toilet but the supermarket doesn’t have one. A quick foray into the bushes reveals a hastily ripped opened and abandoned 4 pack of toilet paper and a big curly turd. This must be the toilet then.

00000163-PHOTO-2026-06-30-19-30-07.jpg

His mate wants a word. “I’ve got a problem. I’ve got an engine light come on”. Well, actually that will be Africa that has her engine light on. Fuck. That’s given The Twat something to think about. Still, his mate has at least 20 new warming lights on every time I see him and he’s still going. I just hope he doesn’t go “full house” whilst we’re away. I have a quick word with Africa and tell her to get her shit together fast else she’s going home.

Roll up to the Kalinigrad border. There is the line. There is the barrier. There is the farewell point. I will never be at this place again. One last look in the mirrors and it’s gone. Forever.

00000165-PHOTO-2026-06-30-19-30-37.jpg

The Lithuania border is quick. But just as everything is done and the barrier is about to be lifted the young blonde in the booth asks The Twat “How old is your friend?”. He asks her to guess. “70?” No. She looks at his passport and her eyes pop wide open “Is it really true?” “Yes love, yes it is. I borrowed him from The Natural History museum”

Lithuania is a bore. We’re just on the motorway and it’s like we’ve exited Russia into Euro MineCraft. Straight roads, big, boxy buildings everywhere. Everything made for minimum price, style and effort. Eurobland. “Where the fuck are we?” Land.

The baggage is holed up in a sweaty cheap room full of flies whilst I sit outside and watch 2 people squeeze each other’s spots like a couple of chimps. I’d rather be back in Russia to be perfectly honest.

Tomorrow is another crossing into the void. I’ll see you on the other side. Hopefully.

So glad to be reading another of your little trips, it always makes me feel 'sane' again. :beerjug:

Well that didn’t go quite to plan🤬. We rocked up to the Lithuania border with Belarus and it was immediately clear that Africa and I were not welcome. The bloke got out the car in front and said something to the effect that bikes weren’t allowed. The Twat in his usual fashion just asked Google which said “yes, of course you can bring your motorcycle into Belarus”, and ignored him.

00000171-PHOTO-2026-07-01-20-20-25.jpg
00000172-PHOTO-2026-07-01-20-20-25.jpg

But then 3 Belarusians pulled up behind and got out and said the same thing. They all kept saying “Poland”. So rather than take the word of some sweaty randoms I went to the front of the queue and The Twat asked the guard, who pointed at a sign with a motorcycle on it, and a big red stripe though it😞. And then said “Poland”. We turned round and stopped at a petrol station 200m up the road. The luggage dismounted and a truck driver immediately shouted “Poland” at them too.

Turns out, for whatever reason, the mighty government of the world superpower that is Lithuania has banned bikes using this crossing. Wankers😡

And it also turns out The Twat needs to be a lot more specific when he asks whatever feisty AI bitch is on duty if he wants the actual answer. Latvia would be the most convenient, so, of course, it seems it’s a bit of a lottery if you can or not.

So, taking the advice of the locals and making sure to be as specific as he can he asks google “Can an aging, balding, leaking British biker with a milk addiction and a propensity to fart whilst performing even the slightest physical exertion enter Belarus from Poland on his trusty, noisy and extremely potty mouthed motorcycle?”

“Yes”

Excellent.

“But only if he wears pink eye liner and calls himself Carol”

Deal.

It’s a bust for today. The Twat cancels his hotel and in the process donates half the Belarusian GDP in cancellation charges and they point my nose south west towards Poland. We wouldn’t make it to the border until the afternoon and given his passport’s current prowess as a shit magnet we don’t want to start what could be a lengthy process today so we just saunter across the plains watching the weather throw a strop on the horizon.

00000175-PHOTO-2026-07-01-20-21-11.jpg

00000176-PHOTO-2026-07-01-20-21-12.jpg

Our arrival at Augustow is perfect timed to coordinate with the depositing from the sky of 3 times the amount water the drains can handle. Cobbled streets are always a bastard, but cobbled streets under a foot of water are bloody delicious in this heat.

The Twat goes walk about to find some pink eyeliner and he’s struck by a very familiar smell. When he was a kid, his mum used some spectacularly evil foul smelling toxic fly spray. Every time a group of girls comes past it’s like a blast from the past. So either the formula was passed to a perfume manufacturer, or something about Polish girls naturally attracts the flies. ‎

00000181-PHOTO-2026-07-01-20-22-15.jpg

Ok. Let’s try this again. It’s cool and wet and a lot of the roads look like people have been up early throwing their washing up water on them. They’re all frothy, white, and slippery. This road will be much safer when everyone can afford dishwashers.

But at least I can’t see any signs telling motorbikes to fuck off and never darken their door again.

00000183-PHOTO-2026-07-03-08-34-41.jpg

Exit from the EU. This should be simple and straightforward. The Twat hands over his Passport and V5, does his fingerprints and photo then watches as another guard comes to look at the monitor. He takes the passport and V5, comes outside and tells him to move me to a holding area out the way. “Please wait. I need to check”. This is becoming a bit tiresome😞. Brian goes through without incident. Again.

After 30 minutes the guard comes out and asks where we have come from. What route across Europe have we taken. The Twat’s shit magnet is showing no sign of calming down that’s for sure.

His mate thinks it’s because he’s tall. I think it’s because he said his name was Susan instead of Carol. So he just has to just stand there in his pink eyeliner and leather skirt and be smiled and winked at by all the drivers as they pass.

00000185-PHOTO-2026-07-03-08-35-11.jpg

Eventually he is released and we get to the Belarusian side. Going through these fucking bloody wanking shitting Eastern European borders is like watching the The Matrix super slow motion sequences, in super slow motion. Movement is almost imperceptible. It’s like everyone is dead with their bloody eyes open. AhhhhhhhhhHHHHH WHY THE FUCK COULDN’T WE JUST HAVE GONE TO PORTSMOUTH INSTEAD YOU SELFISH USELESS TWAT. WHY OH WHY DO YOU KEEP DOING THIS TO ME?.

5 hours. For 3 bits of paper. And just we were about to leave the Doris that had just been right through my panniers decided I needed a X-Ray too😡. FUCK HIM. I’ve really had enough. I’ve done my time. I just want to get home and spend my retirement sitting in pub car parks telling any other bikes in listening distance just how fucking great I am. Bollocks to this. I’ll do my best to get him round this time and hand over the baton to The Tart in the garage. She’s bloody welcome to him.
00000187-PHOTO-2026-07-03-08-35-35.jpg

And now he’s hanging about playing with his helmet again😡. It’s getting late and I’ve got to take him over 200 miles to Minsk yet. But all he ever thinks about is himself. He's at a Belarussian fuel station and an English voice behind him asks him where they're from. Which is odd. Two Belarussian lawyers that used to work in London with the Belarussian Embassy. He looks like he's a donor for hair transplants, and she's smiling away chatting easily. Very friendly and pleasant, they have a couple of daughters training to be lawyers too. They've returned to Belarus because of the collapse in trade since the conflict started. Another random effect when the war butterfly flapped its wings.

Because he got stung the other night when he had to cancel his hotel, they don’t have any booking for tonight, so we all end up at some kind of kids borstal on the outskirts. I can see their room from the car park. Floors 1-3 are packed with screaming girls slamming doors and stomping up and down the corridors. 4-7 are full of testosterone and young blokes trying to talk with lower voices than their mates while forming fluffy beards from 20 pieces of bum fluff. They’re sandwiched on the 4th floor. Serves the fuckers right. This is all their own fault.

00000200-PHOTO-2026-07-03-08-36-31.jpg

We’ve got a dead day today. A kicking our heals day. The exit refusal at the Lithuania border cost us a day and the knock on effect is that they couldn’t visit the MTЗ tractor factory, like the pair of old saddos that they are. So they spent the day irritating each other like small children instead.

And worrying. Well, The Twat did anyway. His mate doesn’t seem to worry about anything from what I can see.

The Twat is totally consumed with trying to decide his route from here on. His brain is spinning round and round and round. It’s like someone pulling the lever on a broken fruit machine where the wheels never stop. He really wants to go through Russia, but that’s looking increasingly difficult. So maybe he could go up to the top of Finland and enter Russia through Norway just to visit Murmansk, but that’s a 2000 mile round trip. Or he could just turn round and fuck off home back to his comfort blanket of a high vis uniform, a dirty old transit and the familiar sounds of “C@NT.. FUCK.. WANKER CUN@.. FUCKER” from his workmates. But he just can’t do it. It’s all he’s thinking about. He’s reading horror stories of fuel shortages but The Twat is still not discounting that option😳. The harder and more difficult it is, the more he wants to do it. Has he got a fucking death with or something? His original plan was to run right round to Arkhangelsk then catch a ferry across the White Sea to Murmansk and go into Norway from there. And that's what he really wants to do. He's got the SIM and the bank account to help him. It would be difficult and probably involve a shit ton of waiting about but, unfortunately, that's what twitches his trousers. That's what he wants to fill his memory bank with. He wants to scar himself with trials and tribulations and sleeping in ditches eating mud sandwiches waiting for fuel to arrive. WTAF is wrong with him? Well he’ll need to decide pretty dam soon.

Me. I just want to feel my nose being pointed towards home one last time. I want a life without the pressure. I just want sanctuary. And that’s not helping The Twat one little bit. It looks like he is going to have to decide for himself rather than leaving it to fate.

00000206-PHOTO-2026-07-03-19-16-45.jpg

Still, it could be worse. He could spend every day working inside a giant pencil case at a train station.
00000209-PHOTO-2026-07-03-19-16-54.jpg

I woke up in the middle of the night last night and I’m bloody dam sure I could hear big explosions going off. The same sorts of explosions I heard when I was in Russia last year. Way in the distance but BIG booms. It went on for a while. We're not really that far from Kyiv I guess:(

Or.. it could equally have been the sound of The Twat’s brain finally giving up and terminating his turmoil by exploding. But I really think that would be more of a quiet “phut”.

Either way. I think it’s time to leave Belarus. But, as usual, there is more pontificating and distraction and delaying decisions by just sticking his thumb in his mouth, reverting to a child and going to see some BIG trucks.

I’ve had enough of Belarus. Let’s get the fuck out of here. The weather’s shit. It’s 14 degrees and shitting with rain. The road is a constant stream of small temporary diversions made by people who usually make ice rinks. Shiny enough to see your face in and with the grip of a 90 year old Nana. I’m ruining my newly painted nails trying to hang on without throwing The Twat into the woods, though it HAS crossed my mind. More than once. He’s suck a stupid wanker. Riding on fumes on a Sunday morning in a country with fuel stations further apart than Jordan’s knees is asking for trouble. Add in the fact that they only have a few Belarusian Rubles left and that not all places can use card. Well let’s get that right. Everywhere uses card, but not everywhere takes VISA. Belarus is odd. It’s like Russia was a few years ago. It has WhatsApp et al, and not all its banks have been completely cut off the swift system. Some, mostly government affiliated, business use the Russian SibrBank though and are cut off.
00000227-PHOTO-2026-07-06-06-22-39.jpg

And every petrol station he has tried this morning has been Belorusneft which have been giving his card 🖕🤬. I’m getting really thirsty now. REALLY thirsty. He’s such a selfish prick. He has a bit of cash but his mate has none, and he’d rather use his cash to feed himself rather than me. But it’s getting to a point he’ll have to go hungry else we won’t get to the border. I can see what he’s thinking. He’s thinking if he abandons his mate then he can buy fuel and food. But just as he’s about to pick a spot to bury his mate at the roadside there is another station with a different name. He gives the Nana his card, somewhere in the background someone does a drum roll, and it spits out a receipt. Thank fuck for that. His mate can live again and The Twat can eat a soggy lukewarm cinnamon bun.

As he’s chewing he peruses the offerings on the shelves in front of him and imagines someone being sent here for provisions.

00000231-PHOTO-2026-07-06-06-23-08.jpg

“Can you get me an old blanket and a dressing gown while you’re there please? And some crowns please. Get 6 because they were out of stock last time. If you’ve got any change can you get me a cat cushion, and maybe a small surprise”

“Ok, she wants a surprise. I’ll get this to show how much I love her beaver. I’m sure she”ll see the funny side”
00000233-PHOTO-2026-07-06-06-23-36.jpg

I’m full up and ready to go but they’re out of the good stuff so he’s fed me 92 instead of 95. This road leads directly east and there are a lot of Russians filling up before crossing back to join the queues in the motherland.

Belarus really is quite desolate and very sparsely populated. There is next to fuck all between Minsk and the Latvian border except wind and rain and a very lonely little town where they test anti-depressants.

Then a shit storm to the border
00000241-PHOTO-2026-07-06-06-25-51.jpg

00000242-PHOTO-2026-07-06-06-25-51.jpg

Get to the border and as he’s getting off the bike The Twat is looking down at the ground. A beautiful, slim pair of ankles enters his frame in a pair of simple but perfect black shoes. He’s completely mesmerised. The simple creature is fixated. He can hear talking but he can’t bring himself to lift his head and find out where it’s coming from. Then a small pair of jack boots enters the frame and the spell is broken. There js a tall blonde and a stumpy brunette vying for his attention. Stumpy is firing Russian at him and pointing back up the road.

“I don’t understand, sorry. Can’t we talk about this ladies ankles instead? I’ve never seen anything like them. They look like they were made by an expert sculptor”

Stumpy turns up the volume and crosses her arms. Perhaps she’s jealous. Perhaps she has “cankles” instead. That’s why she wraps them up in fatigues instead of wearing a skirt. Either way there is no way we’re getting out at the moment.

“I’m fine. I am happy to wait here for hours and just look at those ankles. Take as long as you like”

But no. A driver crossing the other way gets his daughter out the car to translate what he already knew but didn’t register due to his childish man brain’s current obsession. He read about having to register to exit and he tried but couldn’t find any way to do it. So, as usual, he stuck his head up his arse, ignored it and let fate decide the outcome. So back they go to find a shabby hut with a pair of Nanas and a lottery card machine. Twat read it was 5 Rubles for bikes to exit and has 10 in his pocket but Nana wants 25 each so they play the lottery, wait for the request mouse to run all the way back along the line to the bank, have a rest and a piece of cheese, then run all the way back, and out spits our exit ticket👍 The Twat manages to grab a few last longing looks at ankles and they’re through to the border and after a couple of hours back into Latvia.

Loving this so far. I’ve lots of friends in Minsk and have been several times, so the photos bring back some happy memories. There’s more hot totty per square metre than anywhere else I’ve ever been 😍 but it can feel like the most depressing city on the planet at the same time.

The black and white photo of the older lady on the park bench is an absolute corker!

Safe onward travels!

Today’s the day. And it doesn’t start as planned. Last night The Twat and his mate were making plans for Russia. But after sleeping on it his mate has changed his mind. He doesn't want to go in. The Twat suggests he could ride on alone to Sweden where he has a friend we will be visiting but he is not as enthusiastic about that suggestion as The Twat was hoping. He wants to wait in Estonia for him and then travel on together.

The Twat closes his eyes. He sees a leather chair in his mind. Green, old, worn and comfortable. Sitting in the chair is The Huntsman, relaxing and reading a book as he hears his mate's words come in over the loudspeakers. He sighs and closes the book. Under his breath he whispers, "Fuck. I was really enjoying that", closes the book, gets up out the chair and slowly, reluctantly, heads down a long dark set of stairs to The Kennels. He can hear stirring behind the door, noses sniffing the air, claws tapping on the floor. He stops. He thinks. Given the announcement he just heard, he really is in absolutely no doubt what he has to do. He goes to the latch, slides it back and hears the barking start. In just a few seconds the whole choir is singing and the noise is deafening. He does what he has to do.

He lets The Dogs out.

And The Twat can hear every last one of them running through the corridors of his mind. Going through doors, jumping on the furniture, knocking over decisions he thought he'd already made and then shitting all over his carefully prepared plans lying on the floor. The dogs are over excited and must be calmed down. As usual The Twat decides in haste so he can repent at leisure. He knows he has to at least go into Russia himself, if only for a few days. He's gone to a lot of time and effort and cost to prepare he and I for this. Circumstances are changing all the time and this may well be the last time he even has the opportunity to get up to Murmansk, at least in the short term. But, he needs a plan. He desperately needs a bone to throw to the dogs, even if it only placates them temporarily. He and his mate had been discussing going to St Petersburg and The Twat hoped that once there, they would just continue north up the Kola highway. It's not a massive long way. 4/5 tanks of fuel. He really needs to get his "Adventure Fix". If he doesn't, there will be hell to pay in the dark recesses behind his eyes.

He has to do it. There isn't a choice. St Petersburg is like giving him a Polo mint for a migraine, but a decision has to be made right now otherwise The Dogs will run riot and take over and he'll just implode.

His stomach is in a knot. His knob has run away and hid so now his jap’s eye is flush with his tummy and it looks just like he has a teeny tiny lady garden. He’s driving me today like he’s on the way to his own funeral. We stop for lunch (unusual) and he orders a calorific super nightmare (even more unusual) like it’s his last meal.

He’s spoken to his wife too. Now, if you don’t have a wife that tells you that you have to do things like this so she can turn the spare bedroom into a dressing room and the garage into a potting shed then you’re with the wrong woman. I’m sure she’s only joking, probably, and I’m sure The Tart would fight any attempt to throw her out onto the street😁

So he’s weighted it all up. He knows he’s fucking stupid, he knows there are risks, he knows there are drones prowling the skies and that getting petrol will not be straightforward, but he’s going back into Russia, just for a few days. It's much more dangerous for him to return home now without at least trying.

He’s sure it’s the most sensible option.

The Twat takes me for a final meal and treats me to 98 for a change. Both tanks to the brim and a 6L spare. It’s about 220 miles to St Petersburg from here and he’s assuming there is no fuel on the way
00000257-PHOTO-2026-07-12-05-43-12.jpg

And this is what The Twat did in his pants on the way this morning. It’s like giving a shoulder ride to a baby that’s shit it’s nappy😳
00000259-PHOTO-2026-07-12-05-43-39.jpg

The Russians have an app that gives fuel availability, albeit delayed. His first target of Pskov shows no fuel by St Petersburg should be ok.

You have to book an exit slot out of Estonia. Turn up. Wait 5 minutes. I’m pushed through. Just me. Ok then.
00000267-PHOTO-2026-07-12-05-46-55.jpg

10 minutes. Out of Lithuania. It’s 11:30am. Russian border. One car in front of me. Re-fucking-sult. This will be a breeze. They’re celebrating my last visit with a royal border crossing. He takes his passport to the booth. And she points to a waiting room. Not just for him. For everyone crossing. There are a load of foot passengers coming through too. And each one is being interviewed. Separately. For ages. After a couple of hours a couple of other bikes with Russian/German riders appears too. And wait. 5 hours later. 5 FUCKING HOURS🤬. 5 hours of watching a bloke come out of a door, call a name that isn’t his, and disappear again. 5 hours of watching people that have arrived later go before him. 5 FUCKING HOURS. This would try the patience of a saint. And as it so happens, a bus load of saints arrives and joins the queue. They all stand around patiently. None of them can show they are less patient than the others. It’s a game nobody must loose. At 5 hours be is called for his interview. Same as before. Same questions. Same phone deep dive but at least The Twat had the good sense to go through and delete all the “troublesome” messages before we arrived.

So 6 hours. The car that was in front of me is still here. This CANNOT BE FUCKING HAPPENING AGAIN. IT. CAN. NOT. I’m not having this. I push my way through past the other cars and bikes right up to the barrier. Fuck um. I’m going to do it. I’m just going to run. See if they can catch me. I ask The Twat if he can take one last picture of me before I’m shot to pieces like the end of Butch Cassidy and the sun dance kid. He says getting the camera out at the Russian border would be like covering your knob in jam and ramming it into a wasps nest. So he does it. Twat.
00000269-PHOTO-2026-07-12-05-50-45.jpg

The Russian tells The Twat “you’re next” just to wind him up, before the barrier rises and the Russians ride out. What a strange sense of humour they have..

Out of the corner of his eye The Twat sees St Francis step out from the hut, take a surreptitious look about, then yell “BOLLOCKS” at the top of his voice before putting his hands gently together in front of him and walk slowly back in to wait.

8 hours. Nothing. Then they decide rather than the usual hand search of my panniers they want them REMOVED and put through luggage x-Ray scanner. REMOVED🤬 Never ever at any border ever before in the history of bikerkind has that happened. The Twat is boiling. I can see his eyes bubbling. I know the signs. He’s closer than I’ve ever seen him to doing something extremely inconvenient. Off they come and into the X-Ray room they go. There are a dozen people in front and the winner of Russia’s anal bag checker the last 20 years running is opening people’s packets of biscuits and checking they have the right number in. That no forks with 6 splines come through. That no eggs contain double yolks. He’s going to be checking his own bollocks in a minute. One on each hand. Each in a separate jar. CU@T.

But a young lady checker with a face like a 1970 Volvo has spotted the potential de-gloving of his bollocks and has offered to check The Twat’s bags. She has lovely bright green and very naughty eyes and a good pair of knees but her lips stick out like the aforementioned Volvo’s bumpers. Still, I’m sure they must be good for something or another😳. Anyway, she gives the panniers a cursory rummage, runs her slim hands over his biscuits and gives his eggs a gentle squeeze and lets him through with a giggle.

Game on. I’m done I think. So does The Twat. He’s got one pannier back on and he’s fitting the other when he hears a “Niet” from Satan’s little helper that is processing my paperwork. She comes stomping over and tells me I need to be x-rayed too, and I must be NAKED. NAKED? Never have I ever had to be fucking NAKED for an x-ray. The Twat is twitching. Tears, or possibly blood, is coming from his eyes. The dummy is up to launch pressure… he looks pleadingly at DL240 but she can’t help him. He opens the panniers, throws everything on the floor, rips them off and goes away to sulk. I have to totter off naked with everyone watching down to the X-ray machine alone. He’s done. He’s had it.

9:30. 10 hours. The paperwork suddenly appears as though she’s been working on it solidly instead of maintaining her 1% 99% work shirk balance🤬. The Twat is in a daze. He’s on autopilot. As we pull away we see Saint Mary of all people run out of the office and shout “if that mother fucking **** doesn’t get his wanking fucking arse in gear in the next 2 minutes I’m going to nail his sorry cock to a cross and burn it”.

See what I mean.

We go to the first petrol station. The desk of the insurance agent is empty. a trucker tells the Twat something like “one shop 25-30km left side”. Should be easy enough. NOT. It’s almost dark. There is a random village. A random shop. The twat walks in. “Green card? Insurance?” A random woman says “Sorry, no one round here can help you”. He walks out. Rides 2 meters and spots a light on in a small shed with a neon sign.
00000271-PHOTO-2026-07-12-05-52-31.jpg

Walks in. 24 hour insurance. It’s a 6ft square shed with a bed in. She takes £40 for a random piece of paper that is probably worthless but could possibly be priceless. Pskov is dark and intimidating. It’s nearly 11 and his old eyes are struggling so I steer him through the melee to an ancient Soviet hotel between a park and blocks of flats, or possibly a prison. Whatever, I’m sure I’ll be safe on my own here tonight thanks all the same. But then as he leaves he gives me a pat and tells me he loves me. That’s all a girl needs.

This morning he opens his curtains and a finds a face staring at him. A face that’s making him seriously question his latest life choices.

It’s time for him to choose fight or flight. An easy day back to the border or another 200 miles away from it. Jesus Christ it’s not life or death, hopefully. Let’s not overdramatise it. He’s been to St Petersburg before many years ago but this time it’s very different. All the fuel stations we’ve seen so far have been coned off and empty. The Russians at the border said 92 fuel is available in St Petersburg, but very much advised against going north towards Murmansk from there. That will have to wait for another time. His stomach is saying flight. And his head is saying flight too, most of the time. Deep deep down, in the hard wired, uncompromising and unchangeable character traits locked forever in his DNA he knows he's going in, but it doesn't stop his other 2 dozen personalities trying to persuade him the opposite.

My “normal” range is less than the 220 miles to St Petersburg. And he’s on his own now. His phone isn’t working. At all. No data and it won’t connect to the internet or wi-fi either. That’s really unnerving him, but he tells himself he has a SatNav and cash and that's all he really needs. The hotel restaurant is closed/derelict so he takes a walk on a coffee hunt. Someone has turned up the sad to the max. It’s grey, it’s cold, it’s raining and everyone on the street has got up, gone to their face drawer and pulled out an unhappy one to wear. Last night on the way in we went past a shop selling happy faces, but it had gone out of business. It’s that kind of a place.

He can detect the scent of a Nana and baked goods in the air, the perfect combination, and follows it through the rain to a warm oasis with steamed up windows. Warm apple pie and coffee. There is life here at least. He is a seriously fucked up individual. His emotions seem to spend all their time just fighting each other. Going back and forth like someone is injecting him with one thing then the complete opposite. But I know him better than anyone. He loves to just stand in the street like a visitor from another world. He creates an indelible memory by just standing still and completely saturating his brain with the noises, the smells, the people, the rain, the cold. He looks down at his feet to root himself in this spot. This spot he can recall in detail at any moment. He can stand in the local Sainsburys and look at his feet and remember life doesn't have to be like this, and that these feet have stood in a cold puddle in Pskov and watched people with outdated clothes and problematical lives walking to dead end jobs just to keep madness from their doors. And that he has the means to leave that place just through virtue of a small paper document in the pocket of his jacket hanging behind an insecure door of a semi derelict hotel a mile away. This is him. This is his happy/unhappy place. This is what his tiny mind needs to consume in order to function.

A slow walk back. Check out. Load up. Traffic lights. Left or right. Fight or flight. He just closes his eyes. He doesn’t want to be responsible for the decision, but he knows I can read his mind. So I choose left. I’m not giving up.

This road, like a lot in Russia is a deadly dull arterial highway. Life at 50mph normally gives you time to look at take everything in but not here. That reeks of arrogance of course. The arrogance born of many many miles in this country over many many visits. Everything is different here. Buildings. Trucks. Shops. Infrastructure. Everything would be alien to a first time visitor but his head has seen it all before. All he can do is concentrate on going forward rather than turning back.

Russia is obviously prioritising diesel fuel to keep things moving. As you pass, any stations that have fuel highlight what they have by the flashing the price on their signs. There are a few flashing only diesel but none petrol until about 140 miles in. I can feel my back being bathed in warm, moist, fetid air as The Twat breathes out through his back door and points me at a pump. I feel much better and I’m happy to watch him through a tatty cafe window when he eats his first meal for 2 days. I’m sure if you threw those sausages on the floor they would bounce right back into your hand but right now he doesn’t give a fuck.

The contrasts in Russia are always stark and the transition from poverty to palaces as you approach St Petersburg is a prime example of that. Like Minsk, and unlike any city at home, St Petersburg seems to just start immediately. No suburbs. No slow burn, just BANG, St Petersburg.

00000290-PHOTO-2026-07-12-05-58-33.jpg

There are fuel stations, with queues, but fortunately not of the epic proportions you see elsewhere. He is still trying to convince himself that getting to St Petersburg will be enough. That the dogs and the demons will be happy with that and return to their beds. He knows, realistically, that's as likely as Trump taking up knitting, but he cannot just abandon his old mate in Estonia. Can he? He is, by his nature, an abominably selfish and single minded individual. He knows that all too well. It has caused him many problems in the past but he cannot change. There is always a trade off. If he doesn't get his way, someone will always pay. The bloke is a c*nt, what more can I say. And people are going to suffer.

In his very very sort term plan he has 2 main objectives.

First, Get enough fuel to get back to Estonia in one. ✅

Second, Get to the hotel. Previous experience has told him the satnav is likely to have a thick black cloak thrown over its head the closer it gets to the city centre. The phone has already gone full dementia and doesn’t know who it is, where it is or what year of the week it is🫢😁

We ride in with the sat nav zoomed out, trying to memorise the route in case it all suddenly goes to shit. Then it starts saying “route not open to vehicles”, which is nice, but can often be ignored by taking to footpaths and tramways😁. We’re getting close. He knows what the building looks like, sort of, so he turns down the “no vehicles” road, puts his eyes on stalks and sees the hotel building. It meets up with proper roads, he’s up to the door, and his heartbeat is back to 2 digits. Objective met👍.

The hotel advertised “secure parking”, but that must have been before the parking attendant… er… died back in the 80s. I guess I’ll have to sleep with one eye open, again.

As an objective he has set himself, The Twat is here is for a fridge magnet and some replica eggs for his grand daughters from the Faberge museum gift shop. That’s it. That’s his ✅. His challenge. His current raison d'etre. He is totally and obsessively goal driven yet it still seems to bring him no satisfaction whatsoever when he scores. He is fully capable of falling deep into the dark downs of failure yet he is singularly incapable of experiencing the joys of success. It drives me absolutely mental and I know it does exactly the same to him. I know a few medical experts that would agree too😳. He's made it this far. The dogs are running off in the direction of Murmansk, dragging his soul with them, pulling him apart inside.

Mission set. He goes to the complementary face drawer in his room, picks “Resting bastard, 50% wrinkles, ancient, with beard” and off he goes to the Metro station.

St Petersburg is a big and extremely old city with a network of canals and rivers and a huge inlet. There is more history here than you could throw an American at. It’s absolutely everywhere you turn. Royal Palaces, cathedrals, a huge mosque, on old Royal mint, The Hermitage, House of Faberge. The list is endless. And you can feel it as you move about. And it’s very beautiful. Much more beautiful than Moscow.

00000312-PHOTO-2026-07-13-15-55-51.jpg

When he gets back with his sore feet and his gift bag I try to read his mind but he’s temporarily blocked me. That can only mean one thing. He’s been letching lots of beautiful ladies that he’d love to lend a warm soapy hand to. I cannot leave him alone for 1 bloody minute. I hope he can use that bloody warm soapy hand on me when we get home but I very much doubt it. Not if his current dark mood are anything to go by.

Today should be a day to hopefully unwind. Unwind the miles back towards the border. Unwind the tension of being alone in a potentially hostile place with only a thin patina of arrogance to protect him. Unwind the bars on a fuel gauge and hope they don’t all disappear. But it won't. The pull to go north is much stronger than the one to south. This is the exact moment his problems begin. When the dogs, unsatisfied with a quick run and a small meal will turn and start to eat him alive.

He’s drinking coffee waiting for a shop to open before he leaves. People watching. Wondering. Of course all societies are different and despite their dilutions through the ebbs and flows of people across borders generalisations still apply. And the Russians are no exception. But he wonders if there is any country in the modern world where the government really represents the people.

This morning The Twat has watched two people, one young and one old, both walking their dogs. One dog young, indecisive, pissing about and just sniffing, randomly sitting and watching the world go by, and the other old, having to think about every step it puts in front of the other, stiff and uncomfortable but still enjoying the fresh scents of the morning air. And both walkers have been patient, compassionate, and obviously caring towards their pets. People you could drop into any society and they wouldn’t look out of place. It just makes him think. There is nothing more to it than that. There is good and bad everywhere.

I can see him now from the car park. He’s just standing at a busy set of traffic lights. He’s been standing there for the last 5 minutes, just watching the end credits roll for Russia. I know I’ll never be back here. He’s wondering the same. Time and circumstances are not on his side.

Time to go.

Paranoia can be really parannoying when you’re in tight, hot and fast city traffic. Being over cautious when everyone else is making split second decisions, chopping in and out and generally being a c@nt can be worse than turning all the defences off and just attacking. Jump in and enjoy the ride. Forget about how far from home you are and just play the local’s game. The rules are easy. There are no rules.

Apart from a BMW seven series missing me by an inch while overtaking at about 100 in my lane all is fine and we get out the city alive. We’re heading south and I suspect they’re expecting incoming because all of a sudden my GPS switches to full Trump mode. The map is spinning around, the route looks like it was drawn by a 2 year old on an etch-a-sketch and all the speed and direction information it’s telling me bears absolutely no relation to reality. I somehow manage to be both impressed, and unimpressed.

We stop at the same station we fuelled up at a few days ago but it’s now empty.

Jason: Another is advertising 98, 95 and 92 and attracting the traffic but by the time you get to the pump all the good stuff is gone.

The hostess at tonight’s hotel is, I suspect, as dirty as the underside of a train as my friend would put it. At my age, I just hope she cooks a nice breakfast.

He’s lying in bed reading a book. It all feels so normal. Then he receives a reality check via text.

“Attention! A drone alert has been issued in the Pskov region. Communication and internet disruptions are possible. Please remain calm.”

And then later

“Drone alert in the Pskov region. If you spot debris, do not approach it and call 112”

And suddenly it doesn’t feel normal at all. We’re not daring doo adventurers. We’re just a pair of stupid idiots out for a ride. I’d put out “adventure” rating at about 4 to 4.5 at most. He’s not being histrionic but it’s not the kind of thing he usually receives during an evening watching Eastenders. Maybe it really is time to leave. Or maybe its time to turn around, again, and do what the dogs want.

Pskov is a shabby town. I’ve been before. A quick Chinese and to the supermarket. First to marvel at the array of typically Russian children’s energy drinks

And then a bit of self indulgent milk porn before bed
00000344-PHOTO-2026-07-13-16-24-32.jpg

A restless night tortured by constant heavy dripping off the roof in a storm and this morning he’s feeling completely torn. Time for a walk down the river for some reflection before breakfast. All is quiet. The sky is sleepy but happily drone free. The wind is arranging the leaves on the trees. The Twat is being quietly contemplative. It seems that age has decided to pay him an unwelcome visit. Age is supposed to creep up on you and today it has jumped out from behind a tree and caught him unaware. There is, of course, a last time for everything. Sometimes you know it, and sometimes you don’t. And The Twat is wondering if this is one of those moments. He’s doing a lot of wondering at the moment. That’s what happens to him when he’s left alone and the dogs get out.

00000356-PHOTO-2026-07-13-16-30-03.jpg

It’s a lonely ride out to the border by 10. Last time we were here we were through into Estonia in an hour. There is a small queue but nothing too bad. Walk up to passport control and the flap opens. First thing I see is DL240’s lips poking through. She’s on exit duty today and she smiling away and laughing. She even signs my helmet😳. Perhaps I should have got her to put on some lipstick and kiss it instead. Anyway, get the panniers off and x-ray’d PDQ and off to customs. Fuck it’s only 12, I’ll be in Tallin in time for tea and crumpets😁

The custom woman looks trouble. She oozes it. It’s seeping out of her eyes. She takes his passport, climbs up onto the little shelf, squats over his bowl, puts a huge smile on her face and deposits a huge curly turd in his porridge. She hands him an interview form to fill in and points to the room of doom, purgatory, the closed door at the end of the world. “Wait…”

He goes in, memorises the faces and begins his sentence, though he’s not entirely sure of his crime.

There is a door. Whenever it opens there is noise. Probably of the dead beyond, and the people this side trying to reason with unreasonable people. Every opening is like throwing bread to the ducks. Frantic quacking in a language he doesn’t understand and cannot possibly hope to negotiate in. He is totally at their mercy. His list of faces go in the door, come out, disappear. A coach arrives. People come, people go. And he knows exactly what’s happening. They’re playing mind games. They’re trying to mess with his swede. But they don’t know his middle name is patience. Well his middle name is actually patience patience patience patience patience to be exact. He knows what’s happening, and he knows this game has a hard stop timeout, even though he’s extraordinary pissed off at the thought of reaching it. The Estonia border is only open until 7. They will need to shift him before then. But it’s still only 4pm.

So they maintain a steady flow of people. They soak up the time. They sit on their hands and they just play the game. 6:30. Everyone else has gone. He’s the last one alone in the room. The door opens. His name is called. He is given his passport. “You can go”. No interview. No nothing. Just a giant yank on his chain. 6 hours wait, for absolutely nothing at all except the pleasure of one or two monumentally epics cnuts.

Estonia border is done in 10 minutes. 10 minutes vs 8 and half hours.

We’ve got somewhere to be 200 miles north. There is fork lightening on the horizon. I suspect that may be due to the fission running through The Twat as he contemplates the difference just a couple of worthless, dark human souls can make. What ripples they cause. What they’d look like with an M45 bolt screwed right up into their arseholes.

But would he have preferred a quick, trouble free exit from Russia? Or course he wouldn't. It's just another stick to beat himself with, or throw to the dogs.

00000358-PHOTO-2026-07-13-16-31-11.jpg

I’m happy to run though. I’m happy to splash about in the rain and enjoy myself for a few hours while the water cools The Twat’s temperature and the steam floats off into the night.

We arrive about 11. He knocks on a door and he’s met by his mate and slips back into his other world again. Only a set of memories and a few Faberge eggs, and a pack of screaming dogs in his head to prove he went off piste.

Was it worth the effort, the inconvenience, all the fucking about and pressure. FUCK yes. At least that’s one thing that The Twat and I agree upon unequivocally. Normalcy is a dish we’d both prefer to be served after we’re dead.

Is this the last picture of The Twat???

Cors not - he's back in the land of the free!!!

Thank you Bitch for presenting us with such viseral images created with words . . . the pictures just add context to the workings of his dark, cavernous mind.
