The fast idle lever on my bike is rarely used, and presumably the PO didn't use it much as it was partially siezed when I bought the bike.
My idle is probably a bit low (barely 1100rpm) but it starts fine most mornings without throttle and then idles with a little bit of throttle applied.
One damp morning last week it was reluctant to start so I used the fast idle lever
This made only a very slighty difference to idle speed when in the 'fully up' sprung position. In the 'mid' position the bike wouldn't run at all - kept stalling and behaving as if the throttle balance was way out when I managed to get it running. Like it is when one of the throttle cables is mis-seated. Since then the bike's not been so smooth (although it recovered from the worst of the symptoms as it warmed up) and I'll be doing another throttle balance on Friday to see whether it's out.
I've not delved into the splitter box (can't figure out how to get to it - the factory manual doesn't seem to help much) but is it possible that some fault with the idle cable adjustment could affect throttle balance by pulling more on one throttle cable than on the other inside the splitter?
I think that as the cooler weather comes I'll just adjust the idle speed up to the top end of the recommended range and still do without the fast idle. It doesn't seem to do anything useful anyway. I just want to make sure that there's no chance it's continuing to screw things up even when not being used.
