The fast idle lever on my bike is rarely used, and presumably the PO didn't use it much as it was partially siezed when I bought the bike.

My idle is probably a bit low (barely 1100rpm) but it starts fine most mornings without throttle and then idles with a little bit of throttle applied.

One damp morning last week it was reluctant to start so I used the fast idle lever :blast This made only a very slighty difference to idle speed when in the 'fully up' sprung position. In the 'mid' position the bike wouldn't run at all - kept stalling and behaving as if the throttle balance was way out when I managed to get it running. Like it is when one of the throttle cables is mis-seated. Since then the bike's not been so smooth (although it recovered from the worst of the symptoms as it warmed up) and I'll be doing another throttle balance on Friday to see whether it's out.

I've not delved into the splitter box (can't figure out how to get to it - the factory manual doesn't seem to help much) but is it possible that some fault with the idle cable adjustment could affect throttle balance by pulling more on one throttle cable than on the other inside the splitter?

I think that as the cooler weather comes I'll just adjust the idle speed up to the top end of the recommended range and still do without the fast idle. It doesn't seem to do anything useful anyway. I just want to make sure that there's no chance it's continuing to screw things up even when not being used.

The splitter box you don't want to know about, it lives under the battery and comes out from thr right hand side. The bracket on the frame holding the rtank wiring socket covers about half of it making it a pain and a half to remove. I never used my cold start (85000) just a wiff of throttle on cold days and removed the thing when changed the throttle cables. have you ever changed these? mine started sticking at about 80.000 supposed to be changed well before then or perhaps the cold start cable has frayed. Any way the jobs apain and needs the tank off there 's avery good picture stopry of throttle cableds so do search helped me a lot.
Have fun.

I tried to investigate it a couple of weeks ago when I had the tank off, but I couldn't figure out how it's attached to the underside of the battery frame (if it is). I took the battery out and removed the bolts that hold the battery/ECU frame in place, disconnected the ECU and......the splitter box didn't budge so I gave up.

No - I bought replacements but haven't needed to fit them (27k miles).

Hmmm, fun. Something I think the job won't be.... Thanks anyway.

Ah, found the post you're talking about:

Hmmmm, so there's a spring clip holding it in place.......It all starts to become (slightly) clear :thumb2

And for anyone who finds this thread in 20 years time here's the other useful thing I found about a modification I didn't know existed (to the main cable from the throttle grip):

I can predict a lot of swearing this weekend, emanating from my garage..... and a trip to my local dealer for the modified main throttle cable if I'm going to change the lot - I bought only the two short ones.
