On a recent trip to Switzerland my trustworthy R1150 GS simply gave up the ghost. The BMW mechanic at the local garage ascertained faulty fuel pump & it was subsequently replaced.
I was a bit surprised as the bike has only done 42000 miles. I also found out that the fuel filter was blocked up.
Anyone elase suffered a similar fate or is this to be expected after 40000 plus miles?

It's a mechanical/electrical item - they will fail at some point. Your friends died earlier than normal, it happens from time to time, same with humans.
Mine just stopped ... coming back from work and on the final leg home ... up a hill ... truck behind me ... and the engine just died! Luckily there was sufficient [uphill] speed to pull over safely ... JUST!
COuldn't restart it ... battery was fine, checked things like the kill switch and throttle cable seating etc - nothing. I managed to push u-turn, free wheel down the hill and then a 2 minute push to the local mechanic who fixes my bike. When we tried to restart there was NO WHIRRING from the fuel pump. He knows these things fail on older BMWs - 2003, 67,000 KM on the clock. I had the same issue on a 10,000 km R1100S ...
BUGGER ... more money spent - not a good bike month this month!
