FD-Any ideas?

Noticed its been been leaking for a while now, Theres no play in it at all. Its on my 06 r1200 GSA which has done just 19000miles any ideas why its leaking and how i can stop it???

Put a new outer oil seal on, job done. Possibly has too much oil in the FD and it has blown the seal out. I would change the FD oil while your at it.

Oil refill quantity has been reduced from 220ml to 180ml.

Might be worth wiping around the seal with the edge of a sheet of paper to remove dirt from the seal face, did that on my last GS and cured a leak.

and it looks like there should be some sort of retaining clip ?
but mine doesn't seem to have one???


i can't understand why ute not there? its only been leaking a couple of months but I've owned the bike 18months and no one has been near the FD

your retaining clip is the ring with a bit missing on the outside circumference of the seal.

Mine works fine with 220ml of oil and only leaked when the wheel bearing failed.

Is there any lateral play at the wheel rim?. If so It might need more than a new seal.

The clip is there, it's the wire clip clearly visible in the pics.

BMW reduced the amount of oil specifically to stop seals from blowing. Maybe you dodged the bullet but it doesn't change the facts of why it was reduced.

Screw in a couple of self taper screws into the seal,not too far but enough to hold. Then the seal will pull out with the help of pliers pulling on the screw heads.

I'm guessing you just prize it out with a screwdriver?

Sorry I didn't refresh the screen before posting

and keep the old seal to help you bosh in the new one...

Massive thanks to everyone for there input as soon as the new seal arrives I'll report back
Out of interest what is the best way of "boshing"it in? You say use the old one but is that with a screwdriver? Or???

Unless your screwdriver looks like a hammer I wouldn't use it.!!!!

Flip the old seal over so that the flat face mates with the new seals flat face, then offer up the new seal and tap against the old seal with the hammer to drift it in. The hammer will damage the old scrap seal without marking the new seal.
