Asked the dealer today about this drain plug in the F/D and they know nothing about it? Still claim that it is sealed for life? Be that 1 day or10 years (1 mile or 100,000miles) who knows. Me I think it is just to get the bike through the warranty period?

ED

Thats what i was told, sealed for life.

Hmmm... A magnetic drain plug was one of my first thoughts to getting some of the crud out.

Will have to see if one of the aftermarket guys produce anything.

Try these people, they are in the States but may have dealer network in Europe.
I have not whipped my FD plug out yet so not sure what size thread it is.

FD warranty work?

New drain plug is definitely at the bottom for new models.

If your GS12 has been in for a FD replacement recently, are the re-fitted FD's with this newer drain hole location?
If not, try asking the question why, if it is proven that the new location is to enable regular lube changes.
As soon as somebody does get a modified replacement, ie with new drain position, please post it here and let the flood gates open.
Regards.
Timpo.

Dealer has just rung me and confirmed this. The new R1200R is the only bike to have in its service schedule state that the F/D oil is changed at 600 mile service? :nenau Then remains unchange for life? Special life time oil is used NOT the normal EP80/90 gearbox oil.

I have just seen the 2007 12GSA, no new drain plug and my dealer knows nothing about changing the FD oil at 600 miles!
Clearly I speed read this post as I was sure someone had a bike with the new drain plug and promised my dealer a photo!
Over to you Gavin!

Saw a brand spanking Black GS at the dealers on Monday,i assume it was an 07 ?. Drain plug was in the same place as my 05.

I own an 07:

just had first service:

1. No new drain plug
2. No news in Australia of service bullitens for FD oil replacement
3. Asked them to do it anyway - cost me fluids plus another hours labour.

Was in Wollaston the other day they know about FD oil change at 600 service.

Mitch

don't suppose you could ask em for a copy of whatever the documentation is and post it up here quietly. ??

Looks like i may have got it wrong!, if you look at the link, and click on 'rear axle', it shows the drain plug and O ring, items 8 & 9 at the bottom, but it could be pictorially incorrect,.....oooops! http://www.maxbmwmotorcycles.com/fiche/MainDiagrams.asp?mospid=47824

There is a 6 ltr capacity vacuum unit which they use, about £67 inc vat, comes with two different hoses, plug small diameter one into it, pump handle to create vacuum in chamber and out comes oil.

Most BMW car garages use it to suck oil up through dipstick tube, works fine with 5 ltr change, dont know how well it would work with 225mm, although repeated filling and sucking would remove most of old oil eventually.

No voided warranty issues as nothing has been taken apart

just asked about this issue at my GSAs first service.

oil change is specced for 2007 first service, but not for 2006. this is not refferring to the model year but the actual year AFAICT.

asked if it was worth changing mine anyway & was told there's a world shortage of the "special oil" and they haven't got any anyway :nenau

That's pure bulls--t :spitfire The required oil in both gearbox and final drive is standard full synthetic multigrade GL5 hypoid oil. SAE 75W90 or SAE 70W140. Available everywhere!

That's correct for the final drive i.e. synthetic SAE 70W90 but the manual states that the Gearbox should have SAE90/hypoid API GL5 and does not refer to this being sythetic. Probually makes little difference.

Planning to change my gear box oil tomorrow at 5,000 miles on my 1200 GSA -noticed that they no longer change it at the first service and service schedule says it does not need changing for 2 years/40,000Km's which is a little too long IMO

Can you get full synthetic multigrade GL5 hypoid oil. SAE 75W90 or SAE 70W140 from halfords etc, what size to they sell it in who makes this oil and how much oil does the gearbox take (will also change the final drive oil while messing about) :beerjug:

OK rear diff oil is on order ; I have ordered SAF-XJ 75w-140 after reading the pdf from Opie oils
Does anybody know where can I get Moly 60 grease to lubricate the driveshaft ?
Halfrauds have nothing equivalent
:D

p.s. crawled around the dealers on hands and knees and none of their new stock of bikes have this illusive rumoured drainplug.
