Feb in Morocco

Early stages of planning :-
A trip to Morocco, leaving Friday 31st Jan Portsmouth to Santander, return 26th Feb Santander to Portsmouth. Was going to do a similar trip last year but the Ferry was cancelled with 36hrs notice and as I had some hotels booked in Spain, I used Tunnel and down through France but as so many more miles ended up just to Almeria and South Spain.

This time not booking Hotels ahead, I like travelling alone, but anyone else going to be in Morocco from around 4th Feb through 22nd Feb ? Could meet up for a beer or two?

Any thoughts or advice, best place to cross from Spain to Morocco?

Tarifa to Tanger Med.

You're probably going to want to get south of the Atlas as fast as possible before your nuts fall off in the cold, and Tanger Med drops you straight on to motorways.

Cheapest is often Algeciras to Tanger Med, quickest (unless route above is accurate) is Tarifa to Tanger Ville. More info at http://www.morocco-knowledgebase.net/forum/showthread.php?t=105

Keep an eye on the weather forecasts and if the north is cold then I'd do as Fanum suggests and hop onto the motorway. You can do Tanger to Marrakech in one day. Then head for the Anti Atlas with Tafraoute and the Ameln Valley, plus Sidi Ifni on the coast.

I think a few years ago that was the case, but last year defo a schedule during Feb as I was booked (although was cancelled because of the weather) and a schedule again this year through Jan / Feb.

I'm heading out to Spain in a week's time and I'm taking Britanny Ferry's 'slow' boat to Bilbao. It leaves late at night from Portsmouth, so if you're coming from some distance away in the UK this gives you all day to get down south. You have two nights on board but with no additional cost over the one night, and you arrive early morning after the second night with a full day to head south.

I did this last January when it was snowing on the ride from London. I arrived around sunset so had a few hours to kill. Rather than hang around in the cold at Portsmouth ferry terminal I headed for Gunwharf Quays shopping centre, stuck the bike in the underground car park next to the attendants' office, caught a film then had a meal at Nandos.

The coldest part of any winter trip to Morocco is normally riding through Spain, check out the overnight temperatures at somewhere like Valdepeñas, see http://uk.weather.com/weather/10day-SPXX1522:1:SP because this is the temperatures you'll be riding in until around 11am (10am in the UK).

As Fanum says...get down south over the Atlas and then you're more or less guaranteed heat and sun...I was there last month and actually only got rained on a little in the North!

Tim is right too ref. a bit nippy in Spain and it too can hose down....

I'm currently in the Altiplano de Granada. We have a interior/exterior weather station and it's below zero at night time (-5ºC a couple of nights back) with daytime temperatures in the sun around 10ºC.
