I'm looking at ferry crossings from Almeria to Melilla for Friday 3rd April 2015. The various ferry websites are saying no availability, is this because I' looking too far in advance or is it normal just to turn up at the port and get a ticket???

Cheers

Almería to Nador is coming up OK for that date so I don't know why. I'm told Nador is an easier border experience but is a daytime crossing so you lose a day's riding.

I did Almería to Melilla a couple of days ago and the border is a right pain, even though I've done it three times before. Make sure you complete your temporary import form before leaving home. When you get to Almería port you need to exchange your online reservation for boarding cards. Ask at the desk for a fiche for Morocco police (the entry form).

When you get to Beni Enzar (the border), filter past all the cars and get to a little compound where there's a couple of customs officers. Park here and walk forward 100m to where there's some cabins, wait in line and get your passport stamped. Then move left to another queue and get your temp import papers done. Walk back to the bike and let the customs officer check the forms and (if necessary) visually inspect the VIN. Finally... walk back to the cabins and this time head for the buildings on the left where a head honcho will put a final stamp on the form.

Or... pay a helper.

It's coming up now with Book a Ferry and I quite like the travel times, gets me into Almeria 8:00, £106.49 with a cabin so not too bad I think. :thumby:

I did that crossing a few years ago - just turned up and got a place.

It was nice to be that flexible, we did Bilbao to Almeria faster than expected (1 day) so slept on the overnight ferry and gained a day in Morocco.

Well, I'm all booked. I decided to take the Tunnel, travel from the North East down to Essex, then catch train 6:20am 31st March, stay one night in France, down into Spain, staying in Aranda de Duero (recommended by a friend), steady ride to Almeria to catch the 23:30 ferry getting me into Melilla 8:00am 3rd April (£95.57 inc cabin), I've written half the day off to get through the border, (no helper for me !) then on to ??? probably to try and find the ruins of the French Legion fort of Camp Bertaux that Tim Cullis mentioned here: http://www.morocco-knowledgebase.net/forum/showthread.php?t=304&p=537&viewfull=1#post537 after that it's still a bit work in progress but almost there.

Tim Cullis if you're in Morocco during April would you like to meet up for a coffee & a chat for a couple of hours? If so let me know when and where and I'll plan accordingly.

Thanks for all your help and advice in on this web site and www.morocco-knowledgebase.net. Also thanks to Timolgra from this site for all the GPS way points !!
