My recent purchase of a R100RS has a problem with the Petrol Tank lock.

Previous owner says its the ignition key, I have tried it and it will not look at it.

Its a 1981 model and can anyone tell me if the model normally uses the ignition lock for the tank?

Can you drill these out easliy and replace the lock?

If it just spins, then simply put a rope through the handle of the cap...stand on the footpegs and pull very hard ( watch your teeth when it pops out :D). New petrol caps are quite expensive btw.

Yes I have just read about the rope trick, it does rotate over 360 degrees so do I assume it just requires a pull?

I just read about the drill operation and am willing to try that as well.

Drill the bmw emblem on the cap and insert a small self tapper. No need to buy a new one, just carry on using the drilled cap.
And If you do get a new one, never lock it....

And another thing. Always turn off your fuel taps after parking/putting the bike away. Do not leave them on.

Will do, thanks Steptoe.

I once also had difficulties unlocking my tank cap, with the only ignition key I got with the bike - the BMW folding key. I soon discovered that when inserting it with the "handle" upright, it did not reach far enough into the lock to match the tumbler slots. With the handle folded (90 deg) it reached slightly further down, allowing me to unlock the cap. Potentially worth checking before applying more drastic measures.

Well the key did not want to go in the lock, so drastic measures, drilled hole and after braking 3 self tappers lock came of, well the top half!
Then the plastic insert, then I could see the main screw which goes into the tank was solid.
So will have to get another cap of some description.
Thanks for the help guys.

Not sure if same problem but my paralever gs had a problem with cap lock once. Solved by just spraying wd40 into the keyhole.
