filling with oil

I did a site search and the conclusion (for me) was
get the bike warm, not just ticking over on the stand, take it for a good run and paste it (thats the bit I like).
get back
put on centre stand.
leave running for a minute.
switch off
leave for a minute
oil half way up glass is about right.

Topping up with oil

In my handbook (in French) that I have, the procedure is absolutely clear. Is that not the case in the UK - before we get too involved!

May I suggest putting it on the side stand for about 5 minutes after riding so the oil in the cooler will drain. If not, you will end up with too much oil after filling to the dot.

Marty is right. And I concur with Brian too (we must have the same french manual, and we read it .....)

Is the 1200 different?

The 'dot' is a target for stabbing when replacing the sight-glass.

Anywhere between the inner top and bottom edges of the red circle is a correct level.

Very true. But I found that if you fill to the top of the circle, the bike starts burning a bit of oil. So as half way up is equally correct, you may as well fill to half way up.

Also, given the widely known variations in oil level reading you can get with GSs, filling half way gives you most tolerance for error.

I wouldn't disagree with that.

(Just trying to avoid people thinking that the centre dot is the 'target' when checking or filling. I've seen people spend ages dripping small amounts in to reach the dot only to have a panic attack the next time they check and it's above!)

Exactly. Look at glass + see oil = ride bike!

Oil checking - the official version

Well I am surprised that the UK habdbook leaves any room for doubt! My French version is quite clear;
The top of the sight glass is MAX and the bottom is MIN. that is clear;
(0.5 litres of oil, representing 10mm on the level, is the difference between warm and cold.)
The drill. Only check when the engine is warm - after a run. Leave for at least five minutes. Then anywhere on the sight glass is OK.

Yep, that's what my manual says and is what I've just done after my second ever ride on the GS! :D
