Ahoy,
Can anybody tell me where the oil and fuel filter lives on my r1150GSA?
i got the service kit from motorworks and am half way through!
i assume il be needing a special tool for the oil filter anyway?
thanks in advance!:)

Fuel filter inside tank, oil filter vertically up into the sump (remove bashplate first) the special tool is recommended for filter removal, be very very careful if you go down the bang a screwdriver through it route, its very easy to destroy the crankcases :thumb2

Should have bought a manual while you were at it.

I was thinking the same - aside from the fact that the manual would tell you where things live, how can you effectively do a service without knowing valve clearances, torque settings etc?

The 'special tool' for the oil filter is pretty cheap (just a few euros/pounds) so definitely worth buying even for one service, let alone if you expect to do more services.

.

Might just confirm what i've posted about peoples idea of doing their own servicing - most are just an oil and filter change :augie:D

Or maybe not even that...if they don`t find where the filter is...... :D :D :augie

Hey I seem to have lost my manual, must be somewhere in the garage, anyhow I changed oil, filter and checked the valve clearances, which were still well within spec, but there again it is just 4k miles since the full annual service, only did the oil change because I am going to be doing 2.5k the week after next, valve clearances checked from memory, what a guy :D

did not change the spark plugs as I did not have a torque wrench available(someone might actually believe that).

planning to do a full annual when I get back, including fitting the Steptoe stainless bolt kit that I bought over 2 years ago :thumb2

I moved my filter outside the tank, its unobtrusive where it is now, but I may well put it back inside the tank where it is less vulnerable, an 1150 of my acquaintance managed eight years and 51000 miles on its original filter  (dealer serviced :augie) the best thing you could do is to remove the nuts holding on the pump plate and copper grease the threads, replace all of the nasty single use clips with proper ones and just carry a spare filter if on a mega trip.

I'd strongly recommend Steptoe's external fuel filter modification too...

I started the mod just before my recent trip around Mongolia and central Asia.
In the end I decided the risk of damage to the filter outside the tank wasn't worth it.

Non of the GS's had a filter change despite dodgy fuel from many places, often poured from a bucket and strained through a piece of old rag.
I've yet to be convinced of a case where an external filter is of any benefit:thumb

Mine did 50K on the original petrol filter, it was still going strong, just had a feeling of guilt!
