I have read various instructions regarding changing the final drive (crown wheel) bearing including doing it at the roadside, how to remove it etc but am still confused as to how to install a new one in the workshop correctly. Does the bearing require preloading or shimming and if so how is the preload determined and set?

Heat it up, drop it on......if it makes a satisfying clunk, it's on properly :thumb2
+1, i stuck my bevel in the freezer for a couple of hours, stuck the bearing in the oven for a bit then plonked it on no trouble at all was still going strong 30k later when i sold it.:thumb

Mic up new bearing and old bearing if the same stick it in. If not then shim. but bearings are made to hi spec so should be the same.:thumb2

No need to feck about with Ovens.
You couldn't design a more purpose built tool for heating up bearings and cases than an old sandwich toaster - available at all good boot sales for around £3.

If there was one truly useful thing I learned this year then it was from this post - thanks Neil it works a charm and pity I did not know this years ago as it would of saved me not only time but stuffing about with stupid ways to heat up bearings :thumb2:beerjug:
