Does any one know how to replace the final drive imput bearing
i inspected it yesterday and the bearing is very notchy. I Think you need a bmw tool to get the ond one out. So has any one here done one or will i have to take it to a bm dealer to get them to do it.

Thanks Stephen

Here's a link to the procedure on ADVrider.

If you are not that confident, you can save a few quid and remove the bevel housing complete and take that to a dealer to change the bearing and check the shimming if needed. That is where you may need special tools apart from a decent 3-legged bearing puller.

I have had a go at doing it myself, it is a fairly easy job to do, its a bit of a pain getting the old bearing off but if you heat the new bearing up it does go on a bit easier.

Must have done something slightly wrong or not seated the bearing correctly as 5000 miles later it is rumbling away again. See a visit to Roy Gardner coming on.

Did you heat up the cover before dropping the flange and bearing into it. :augie

Read the article about rear bearing replacement, i can,t even get the two halves apart after taking out the machine screws. any ideas???????????????

Drain the oil first:thumb

Use a plastic hammer or lump of wood and hammer against the lug where the rear mud guard thingy mounts and knock it inwards. There's a large O ring sealing the 2 cases.
Look at step 3 in the link posted by Colban above.

It would have been easier to have removed the oil seal once they're apart.

When it's off, the rear bevel gear and bearing etc. will lift out or even fall so be careful and put a big rag underneath, you don't want a load of crap getting on it.

See picture above

wow thanks, now that was easy to understand. Thanks a bunch will now go forth and have ago
cheers

I had the input oil seal in the FD fail.

I took off the FD myself and sent it here:-

Great people AFAIC, replaced the input seal (which I supplied) as well as the pivot bearings which they also supplied, about £100 including delivery back. I'm sure it won't be a whole heap more to do the bearing as well!

No connection except as a happy customer.
