Final Drive Failure and Drive Shaft?

Oh bummer....so last night I hear this rubbing like ratchet noise from the rear drive train so take a look at the rear drive and this is what I've discovered;

Firstly big play with hands at 12 and 9 (enough that you can hear the movement)

I've dropped the FD and there seems to be massive drag when spinning the disc, it wont spin freely so to speak.

Also, turning the drive shaft by hand is very "notchy"

Now I am thinking my driveshaft and FD are toast, but what are my options? I am pretty handy with tools but no genius and imagine this could be more than I could chew... Does anyone offer a rebuild service out there and what sort of cost?

With regards to the drive shaft I assume I am resigned to purchasing a new one?

it's a R1200RT
doesn't someone on here rebuild them?
 
So, torn the bike down further, swing arm and drive shaft off (the bearings I replaced on the swing arm pivot were useless, that'll teach me for not using the non-BMW ones, they're fecked!)

Drive shaft has no no noticeable play at the gearbox end and a little click FD end.

Also - should the output shaft from the gearbox be easy to move by hand or a bit stiff?
 
Thanks patzx12 - just finished reading through your thread, very detailed.

So i defo have play in the pinion, and also the the wheel when held at 12/6 - so i am assuming i have a coule of bearings that are toast?

The output shaft from the gearbox should be difficult to turn by hand right..? Thats like trying to move a front sprocket round by hand..
 
Just picked up my 1200 gs from Steve who runs Motoscot (a site sponsor above) after having my final drive rebuilt, if you need advice or someone who can repair it at a reasonable price, give him a call.

Steve at Motoscot rebuilt the final drive properly on my K1200S. He has had lots of experience with rebuilding BMW final drives.

BMW dealers only replace the crown wheel shaft bearings and not the pinion shaft bearings. They don't even remove the final drive from the bike. Steve replaces all the bearings and seals.

Steve says that there should be no side play at all at the end of the pinion shaft. The guy knows what he is talking about and I can recommend him.

I suppose the only advantage to using BMW is that the repair wold be warrantied no?
 
I wouldn't take that as a given. Based on my recent experience (including communications from BMW UK) the network are quite adept at attempting to wriggle out of situations that cost them.
 
Ahhh, yeah I appreciate that...

Bahnstormer in Alton Hampshire have quoted around 300 quid - what do the independents cost run at?
 
Can't help on that as for a number of reasons I bought a 2,000 mile FD, drive shaft and swing arm - all good now.
 
Roundy whats your frame number from the Z to the end another letter and 5 digits

should be 7 in all I think Daisy Duke off this site has an R1200R FD that will bolt on to yours?

You don't say what the mileage is or what age the bike is in the thread :nenau
 
Thanks for that, yes, mine is the single drain hole type of FD...

I am thinking rebuild is going to be cheaper anyhow - looking around on eBay 2nd hand final drives are silly money!
 
The price from BMW has gone rocketing up when I mentioned all internal bearings and seals.... ridiculous - where the feck did 300 quid come from before! The original guy I spoke to didn't sound that confident in all honesty...

Still waiting to hear from motoscot...

Does anyone know anyone else that does it?
