Final Drive Inner seal

I would suggest taking the bike to CW MCs in Dorchester.
I bought my RT12 (Used 5000 miles) from Bahnstormers in 2009, Before I got home I noticed a problem with a warped rear disc (Turned out to be carrier) which Bahnstormers dicked me about for 4 weeks before I threw in the towel and went to CW's, who sorted me out within a week 96,000 miles on the bike now, always serviced at CW's and very happy with the way they deal with customers.
I think you will be happier going there. Worth the ride over IMO.

That was a warranty job and apparently you don't get any sort of warranty on that work.

Taken from BMW warranty booklet " The quality of warranty repairs will be the responsibility of the repairing dealer"

You would seem to have a clear claim against the dealer who carried out the warranty work to your bike. It matters not how it is paid for the dealer cannot avoid the law if he carries out defective work.
Have you contacted the dealer and told them that the work carried out to your bike was unsatisfactory and asked what they intend to do to rectify the situation?

there is no reason why you couldnt do a partial rebuild on the unit if it has only done 2k miles,
i would replace the main wheel bearing as well though as you will need to heat the partially stripped assy to press it apart,
which will bugger the bearing seals and melt the grease,as the unit is stripped the pinion bearings can be checked to confirm they are servicable.
feel free to call me if you need more info

Many thanks for that Mike :thumb2 Is it at all possible to just replace the oil seal on it's own?

I totally agree, Jeff. I did state in no uncertain terms that they can't think it's acceptable the work has to be repeated in such a short time. The service chap said he would write an email to BMW asking how to proceed but I'm not holding my breath.

in order to replace the seal the crown wheel assy has to be pressed out.
this can be done with the wheel carrier on,pressing the crown wheel through both assemblies.(still awake at the back:D)
the wheel carrier is an interference fit (so it is fuggin tight ! i have seen just shy of 9 tonnes on my press even with the whole assy at 150 degrees on a really tight one)
this pressure is being exerted through the bearing to the housing so it really will do it no favours.
so IMO replace the faulty seal, the bearing and the outer seal on the r/h side of the f/d.
cost would be @ £150 ride in ride out (assuming the other bearings are good)

He's too polite to suggest it, but why not post the whole FD to Mikey. Senditnow charge under £15 each way.

I was considering doing that. However, I had a call from the service guy at Bahnstormer yesterday and he was hopeful that BMW would make some sort of goodwill gesture. The fact that the bearing had already been replaced previously and I've got 2 other beemers hopefully might make a difference! I've booked it in after I get back from Garmisch next month, fingers crossed :)

See post number 14 :augie

You request a good will contribution and make a part payment towards the labour or parts replaced and even if your contribution is only £1 then the warranty for that repair remains with you :thumb
