final drive leak

just got in from Cadwell, thankfully it was raining so taking it easy, else i could have slid into the hedgerow somewhere,

riding back, bike felt squirmy from the back end and rear brake not brill, and a rubbing noise appeared from what i thought was the rear of the bike (like a pad out of line or warped disc?)

45 miles later, stopped outside my house gates to open them, and pouring out from the final drive housing onto my tyre was grey oil.

ok so what work am i faced with please? or is this heading to a garage for the repair? cost etc

Rear big bearing and in your case seal as well, not major treat it as a new chain and sprocket..

got bmw picking bike up tomorrow, taking it to Rainbow hopefully, so am i looking at a big bill???

i luckily took out extended warranty last yr so again hopefully the pick up and drop off is free.

That is the best kind of breakdown, with the fault manifesting itself as you pull up to your gate I would be interested to know how much the dealers charge for the big bearing replacement.

Stewart, i looks like it was leaking in the ride back from cadwell, as my panniers were covered in oil, but im guessing the big drop was outside my place.

will let you know when i get the call.

if i could have got the bike somewhere else, or had the time to strip it and have a go myself i would have done but im kinda stuck as i have a euro trip booked in 8 days

i will loose out as i have paid for the trip already, then this cost, im pretty fecked......

or i just go on me old r60, with leaking carbs

They all go eventually, be thankful yours went at home. Mine failed catastrophically with no prior wanring in the middle of a 7km long italian tunnel.

It went again 7000 miles later at home. Still loved that bike (sold it for a sidecar outfit )

Cost was about £150 for the repair to a loose drive box at Allan Jefferies BMW.

, dont fancy the idea of carrying a spare one of them about everywhere!!!

even getting a replacement wont guarantee it wont fail

About once every 40,000'ish miles... it's only £50 for the bearing and seal and a simple enough job to do.

Best get a 1200, as they catch fire sometimes only will fail once then

If the cause of the failure was incorrect shimming from the factory, and the shimming issue isn't corrected when the new bearing is fitted, then of course it will tend to fail again. If the replacement is fitted properly, though, there's no reason to expect it to 'keep going' unless you mean "keep going every 100,000 miles or so" in which case.........it lasts longer than a chain and sprockets

Think of it as a service item and replace it every 40,000 miles if it concerns you.

Then hopefully you will never have to change it roadside

after the fiasco of the final drive bearing and oil seal going, and then having Rainbow repair it, went to Europe and the blasted thing started weeping like a school kid who sweets had been pinched.

3 weeks ago rainbow collected bike and had to replace the whole rear end

apparently when the bearing failed it scored the bearing housing enough for it to leak again

so got bike back yesterday and its got a new shiny rear drive.

glad i didnt pay as they held responsibility

How much did Rainbow charge for the first bearing replacement?

Mine has got 35,000 on it so I am trying to decide whether to do the work myself or book it in somewhere.
