Over the last couple of weeks i've noticed oil coming from the rubber gator between the final drive housing and the swing arm tube, I'm guessing an oil seal is on it's way out, I would be grateful for any comments on cause and ease of replacement, or if it's not an oil seal at all, cheers :thumb

Oil leak

Could be the final drive or the gearbox oil seal. Had this problem myself and the way the dealer worked it out was first to check the oil levels to see which had dropped.

Same Problem

Gremlin,

I had the same problem about a year ago, had the seal replaced and have now the same problem with it leaking again.

My bike is going in Ocean on Monday so I was going to ask the question then.

Drop me an PM and I will let you know what the out come is...

Oil leak

Cheers all, thanks for the info, I will try and PM Dave & Val to see what they say. :clap

Noticed a small dribble on the tyre at Llangollen. The bike is a 21,000 miler 2003 1150GS, this came from the gearbox side of the gaiter. Mind you it's had a dirty smear of oil there for ages. Ninja mans 1150 (8000miles) has this grubby bit around the tie-wrap as well. So hopefully this is nothing to fret about.
After coming the 210 miles home it was no worse, is this a sign of an imminent failure?

When mine went (FD oil seal), it went from clean to this....

in a short time.

After the repair I kept a close eye on it (as you do) and found a further weeping, not as bad as the first time and that turned out to be the gearbox output shaft seal.

I understood this to be fairly common and not helped by the fact that BMW changed the gaitor clip from a metal (jubilee type) one to one that ressembles a big cable tie. I'm sure Steptoe knows more about this.

Just took the gearbox filler plug off, a dribble came out. So not the gearbox seal then. (bike on main stand) Look at the oil level in the "diff" when I feel better. I have terminal man flu, I may not survive, disinfect your keyboard NOW :D

I had my final drive input shaft oil seal changed in March under warranty ('03 1150). http://www.ukgser.com/forums/showthread.php?t=67951&highlight=wheel+rim+oil

Its never been completely dry since. The area stays clean for 2 or 3 rides, then it dumps a smear of oil over the bevel box and/or wheel rim.

I'm doing a long trip in June so Wollastons have agreet to take another look at if for me next week.

The service guy said they get loads in to do - its obviously a common problem

FD Rubber Gator

Sorry to resurrect an old thread but I just noticed that the rubber gator on my 2005 1150 GSA is not secured with anything !!:nenau

The rubber has 2 channels in it, so should it be fixed with a large jubille clip/ cable tie type of thing? If so where best to buy?

I had some work done, under BMW warranty, on the swingarm bearings a little while ago but surely the Main Dealer wouldn't have removed them and not replaced would they :augie:augie

Very likely. I would go back to them. They aren't very expensive, but the large cable tie is hard to source from anywhere but BMW. Sure you can get thinner ones, but the correct thickness spreads the load.

The dealer will have them in stock. But if not Motorworks sell them.

Funny that - same problem as me and i just ordered some of the ties form motorworks - part number TRA35139 £1:20 ish each so get a few... they are 460mm long and 6mm wide, I have looked high a low for other sources but they are all too wide. My final drive input seal is leaking... in for repair as we speak or type...
