As long as it matches the spec I’d say go for it

Mine used to get Motul Gear 300 LS, I changed it annually whilst I was doing the engine oil
Its more expensive than the OE BMW oil. And specs are higher. Its just the brand name ? Why change it ? Syntrax to Transmax . After some research, It does look like they have dropped that name. As its unavailable.
Just out of interest, I have purchased the Motul 7100 after your recommendation. Got it for a good price too. Delivered £50 from sportsbike shop (y)

Cool 👍 let me know what you think of it

I got 5 litres of Smith Allen gear oil for £28 of ebay for mine. I'll change it at the same time as the engine oil, should last me years.

Stu

On this subject what grease would be recommended for the splines .

I use Motul 7100 too and I'm very happy with it, it will soon be getting its 3rd oil change using Motul 7100. The bike is a 2015 GS.
Did you notice any oil levels drop ? One thing many users claimed, was they noticed a significant drop?

Sorry for the late responce, I have only just seen your post. Strangely enough I checked the oil a couple of days ago and was a little surprised to see that it was probably about an 8th of the way down the sight glass. Due to various things, I have not riden it for a couple of months, but I wasn't expecting it to be down. Nothing dramatic, but slightly down.

The 1200 manual recommends Honda M-77 assembly paste. Not cheap but it comes in a 75g tube which you will leave in your will for your children, there so much.
Just out of curiosity, what manual are you refering to that specifies the Honda brand lubrication on a BMW.?

I'm not saying that there is anything wrong with the Honda grease as such, but I would be highly surprised to find BMW specifying a Honda brand product

FWIW, in my DVD (which seems to be no longer updatable), BMW specify the Optimoly TA.

After the mess with the corroded splines, BMW appear to have changed the spec for this lubrication.
I don't recall the name of the replacement, but the dealership sels them. The new type is black, vs the grey colored Optimoly TA.

You've got me thinking now! I've just looked in my Haynes manual for the 1200LC 2013 -2016 and it only says use a molybdenum grease. I bought the Honda stuff in 2016 so can't remember how it was recommended. I'm not a great one for taking stuff straight off You Tube or Facebook etc. so it must have been recommended to me by someone I had confidence in - it's so specific - very likely a BMW technician? The important thing is I've been using it once a year for 8 years and never had an issue with the splines.

My apologies for misleading anyone.

Recommended by BMW or not the Honda M-77 is amazing stuff and you`ll never have a problem with the splines when using it.
Personally i use Bostik `Pure Nickel special` Never Seez which is another non-approved by BM jizz but in this application is more than enough to prevent splines from corrosion and seizure.

You need a molybdenum disulphide based grease for sliding metal surfaces like splined shafts. The combination of molybdenum and sulphur gets deposited (by burnishing) into alternating layers, allowing molecules to slip without galling or tearing.

Best bet is to scrub some into the splines using an old toothbrush before assembly.
