My bike had to go in for a recall check for the fuel pump and Since I am going on bilcos us trip decided to get the new to me 2007 gs (owned it just shy of three months) into bmw for a full service including changing the oil in the fd as couldnt find any service history that said it had been changed in its 21k miles it had covered.
So i took the bike into my local dealer and armed with my ipad sat in their customer area on nice leather sofas. I also priced up a new wc version with one of the sales guys, but declined a test ride as it was a bit wet outside. About an hour and a half in and the service guy comes along and says all ok apart from the fd wont drop so we are going to have to cut the rubber gaiter to get into it but we dont have a replacement in stock so will order one and get the bike in again to get the job done.
So the plan was for me to take the bike home and bring it in again. Then an awful feeling came across me and i decided i wasnt going to ride the bike home and so asked if i could just leave the bike with them until the work was complete. This was fine and they also kindly supplied me with a shiny new courtesy wc gs which i took home. (So got my test ride after all)
Several hours later i received a call from the dealer to say the actual drive shaft is siezed at both ends and needs replaced completley. And i wasnt going to like the price .
At the start of this mini novel i stated i had owned bike just shy of three months, i also got a three month warranty from the local dealer i purchased it from, so long story short and a few phone calls the local dealer is covering the cost of the part and labour to repair it. I am lucky i decided to get the bike in when i did as the warranty would be out in about five days time. Also both bmw and the dealer I purchased the bike from have made it a fairly stress free story but the new shaft is due in tomorow and my bike should be ready for pick up tomoro evening.

Will update once i have my bike back again.

Nice to know thereis a person out there the complete opposite to me.....I would have been 5 days the wrong side of the warranty expiry!!

Just picked my bike up from bmw, and all seems well, she was running a bit lumpy in first and second gear but after a good half hour run home it seems ok now, upon inspecting the fd area i noticed the rubber gaiter at the engine end wasnt flush and the reason for this is a cable tie. I know the older models 1100/1150 used a metal clippy system and am wondering if anyone else has this as a fix by bmw or should i be discussing this with them further?

thanks for the replies, spoke to the fella from bmw this morning and he said they started adding the cable ties a while back to improve water tightness.
I was just a bit unsure of it, may look at getting the steel straps.

Dont get paranoid about it long as its secure why worry ? keep calm ride & enjoy the bike :)

The steel ties need special pliers so might not be usable. They also have to be taken off again. Easy with a plastic zip tie. Maybe not so good with a stainless clip buried in rubber folds.
Worm drive clips (jubilee clips) will have a big lug that will almost certainly rub the rubber bellows. That's if you can find a narrow band type to fit.
The swing arm really should be oil filled but the bellows/gaiters are far from good enough for that.
The best plan is to ride the bike and every now and again use it at full ride height. That keeps grease circulated in U/Js and swing arm bearings and avoids suspension parts seizing up.
