Final Drive - nasty noise

Ok Chaps
Need a little help.

I have just taken my 1100GS fully loaded with pillion down to Morocco (on my honeymoon would you believe) and back, Boiling hot all the way, What a trip.
Anyway part way back and mid way in France, I get a vibration from the rear, oil over the tyre and panniers.

Take a look at the final drive and its leaking like a good one. I filled it up continued, It emptied itself and so the cycle continued till I got home.

The vibration is really bad now,

Removed the drain plug on the final drive, and it has all sorts of chunks on it. No wheel play at all, so I am guessing I have a disintegrated input bearing which intern may have beaten up the gearing.

What are my options hear. Do I strip and repair (should be off the bike this evening) do I buy second hand unit, or bite the bullet and get a new one at £700+. The problem is I am planning a rather longer trip next year and I will need reliability.

Any thoughts?

Oh by the way If I get a new or second hand final drive does it make any difference if I get a ABS or non ABS, The Bike is a ABS unit but I am ripping that out anyway,

You'll have a better idea of whats gone wrong when you open it up... depending on that - get what you can afford. this is fairly rare occurence... so chances are a 2nd hand unit will be just fine... cant see what relevence it has to the ABS... particularly if you intend ripping it out anyway.

Leave the final drive on the bike and just remove the cover and take out the flange/bearings. -That will tell you all you need to know and what your next move is.

I think your next move is to change the bearing, part number 3312 1242 210,
and the shaft seal, part number 3312 7663 482

Had something similar in Scotland last year. AA to Motorrad Central in Glasgow.

New oil seal and rear wheel bearing next morning (Approx £230 fitted) and on the road again. I was amazed at the amount of metal in the oil and on the drain plug. Like yours, no play in the rear wheel.

If it had happened at home I would have fixed it myself for the price of the parts.

Hope this is all that is wrong with yours!!
